WINTER CLOTHING
IS ORDERED FOR LU.
MILITIAMEN HERE
r
Boys at Radio Camp Shiver in-
Cold Blasts During the
Night
Cnpt. Horace P. Jlobbs, mustering- of
ficer for the Dlotrlct mllltla, today re
ceived orders .from .the, War Depart
ment to equip the Ipcnl citizen soldier
irJth heavy woolen clothing and ovcr
ooata In preparation for their departure
for the Mexican border.
Immediately after receiving the orders
Captain Hobbs sent a requisition to tho
army warehouse In Philadelphia for the
necessary uniform. There are 2,000
overcoats In tho armory at Fifth and
1 streets, and. these will bo transferred
to tho mobilization camp within the
next day or two.
The militiamen '.were dad the orders
were Issued for warmer clothing, aa the
venlnus and early mornings In camp
are the coldest they ever have expert-
ineMi aa anlrilara.
Although practically all of the mllltla''
men slept in tneir sweaters ana unaer
two heavy army blankets last night, the
high wind and low temperature made It
uncomfortably cold for them.
Threatened to Strike.
A number of the colored recruits
for the First Separate Battalion are
said to have threatened to "strike"
and leave camp unless warmer cloth
ing was Issued to them. ,
In preparation for the three or four
day field maneuver the latter part of
this .week, In which all the organiza
tions In tho mllltla will participate,
each of them was given a long prac
tice march today.
The three battalions of tho Third
Iteglment. which will be pitted against
Troop A of tho Cavalry and probably
(Batterr A of the Field Artillery,
wore marched to tho, vicinity of Alex
andria, and drilled In outpost rear
guard work. The mounted organiza
tions went .on short practice marches
near Balaton, north of the mobiliza
tion camp.
The bracing wind caused the militia
men to put considerable snap in their
marching ajW tnnneuvers, and they
made a record-breaking trip back to
their tents.
The 200 recruits who went to the
Congress Heights rifle range for tar
get practice the latter part of last
week will return to camp this after
noon. Plans have been made by Brig. Gen.
William E. Harvey and Col. Qlendle
B. Toung to send all of tho pistol ex
perts and other men equipped with
revolvers to the rifle range within
the next several days.
Get More Sleep.
.Colonel Young today Issued orders
for the militiamen to be' given half
an hour's additional sleep. Reveille,
which has been sounded at C:1S
o'clock In the mornlntr since the mob
ilization camp was established, will
hereafter awaken the soldiers at CMS
o'clock. The hour for guard mount
has been advanced from 6 o'clock to
4:40 o'clock, and the evening mess
call from 6 o'clock to 5:1G o'clock.
These last two changes were made
because of tho early hour nt which
darkness settles over the, camp. .
.Although there has been a persistent
rumor at the mobilization camp that
Uen. Leonard 'Wood, commander of
the Department of the Bast, had reconv
mended to tho War Department that
tho District mllltla be sent to the bor
der immediately, and that the local
citizen soldiery had been transferred
to the Southern Department, officials
at tho War Depnrtment today said that
no such recommendation had been
made.
All of tho organizations In tho Dis
trict mllltla will participate In the
funeral procession for Gen. Albert I..
Mills. U. S. A., tomorrow. Although
specific orders had not been Issued
early this afternoon for the militia's
participation, they are expected before
the end of tho day.
National Press Club

Press Club 1ms just been Issued, show
