MARKET TRADING IS OF HIGH PRO FESSIONAL TYPE Prices Variable of No Great Sig nificance General Trend Is Slightly Below Tuesday's Closing Level Steel and Copper Shares Quiet in Their Movements Shipping Re covers After First Hour. NEW YORK, Feb. H-Tradtne dull In the extreme In the, early ses sion, ot today's stock market and transactions were for the. roost part of professional orleln. Price changes were Tarlabla and of no great alemlA cance, tha general level being frac tionally below the Tuesday closing lerel with few exceptions. These exceptions Included In some rases losses of a point or so with now and then a spectacularly weak fsatnra like Cuba Cane Sugar, which suffered a further decline, of some 6 points as result of the uprising In Cuba. American Beet Sugar was also reactionary, but South Porto sugar waa just as strikingly strong, advancing 11 points to 19, on the theory, presumably, that the situa tion In Cuba, would prove of benefit to the company's business. The steel and copper stocks were slightly below the previous closing and were very quiet in their move ments. Smelters and Mexican Petrol eum reacted a point or more. The shipping- shares were weak at the opening with Mercantile Marine com mon and preferred each a. point lower, and Atlantic Gulf common over 3 points down. By the-close of the first hour there was considerable recovery in tha group In a continuous backing and filling movement that prevented any sustained improvement. The muni tion and equipment specialties were likewise depressed somewhat with considerable recovery at times. Cen tral Leather was strong- throughout. The motor shares were under pres sure. The railroad list was quiet and nar rowly irregular. Reading was up a half point and Union Pacific held closely to the Tuesday level at the -lose. Canadian Pacific lost nearly 2 points. There was engaged at the local sub treasury today $200,000 in gold for shipment to South America. TedrB Quotations. Quotations today up to 1:30 o'clock were as follows: Cpea. Hish.
