THE WASHINGTON TIMES,' FRIDAY,' MARCH 23! 1917. , MOTHER JONES HERE TO HELP STRIKERS Gentle in Appearance, Labor Agitator Thunders Denuncia tions of Capitalists. Sha Is a. kindly-featured, gentle- looking; woman of about sixty-five. Th6 plnkness of her oval face Is em phasized by her neatly colled, im maculately whit, hair. Iter address, as she cave it today, is "Anywhere 1 can find a eood fight." Her name is Mary Jones, but no body knows her by that cognomen. From one end of the country to the other she is known as "Mother Jones." She is in Washington to help the striking' employes of the Washing ton Railway and Electric Company. She has no definite program for as sisting the strikers, but she an nounced she Intended to make one or more speeches and do anything else she may to enlist support for the strikers. i Her appearance Deceiving;. "Mother Jones' appearance is very deceiving. At the Atlantic Hotel to day t"ehe sat in her room, attired In a black braided skirt, a plum colored waist with a long lace collar and touches of embroidery at her cuffs. She looks to be a gentle, refined, Intel1 lectual woman exceptionally well pre served for her years. As a matter of fact, she is anything In the world but gentle. She Is ag gressive, militant, and bristling with fight. She possesses a keen sense of humor, but withal ane s a most seri ous 'person with a great number of advanced Ideas and theories. Asthe talked to a Times' reporter she gave every Indication of being highly amused at the civilization of today, "dominated," she said, "by men totally out of step with the march of progress." No one who ever talked with "Moth er Jones" could entertain the slightest notion that she did not mean what ahe said. She Is a very earnest per son, whose stoutlsh frame shakes as she' thunders denunciations and 'vitup eration in the deepest of bass voices. HIsa Serves As Period. She speaks in stentorian tones and a person beyond her presence would hava every reason for believing a man with a rich Irish brogue was talking. When she ends a sentence she hisses the last word and the .sound Is like a shrill whistle, in strik ing contrast with her bass voice. The libel laws prohibit the publica tion of much that "Mother Jones" said. She deals In fire and vitriol all the time. There Is never any cessa tion of invectives, expletives, and terms of opprobrium. She talks generally on capital and labor, but alluded to the local street car strike in characteristic language, and said she was sure the strikers would win. SAME ACTION IN '60'S Mrs. Pickett Recalls How Southern Women Saved. "Economy in dress and a ban on ex travagance in styles, such as planned by New York women on Mayor Mltch el's national defense committee, Is nothing very new:" So says Mrs. La Salle C. Tickett, widow of General Pickett, whose charge at Gettysburg will live for ever In American history. She was known as "Thp Child Bride of the Confederacy," and was a belle of Vir ginia. "Homespun material at 8 cents a yard was used by the girls and women In civil war times, and we had none of these latter-day frills and fashions, But we had 'Just as much attention and Just' as many beaux as the girls of today. "I am thoroughly In accord with those patriotic women In New York, and believe the women of the country should take advantage of every oppor tunity to show their patriotism. "Every woman should do her ut most to support President Wilson in this trying hour of trouble."
