K II 0 ADAMIMMC 1 i 11 nuiai i wiir Us wi liLfll II wl lu If9jv!) rtrimn i inn iiinnn nSawEv un nnrv uu s SHIP PROGRAM There trill be no additional wooden Ihlpa built by the United State Those already contracted for will be com pleted. But no others are to be arrans ed for at this time. This was officially admitted by the federal Shipping Board today. By this action the reorganized board has. In effect, sustained General Goethals, who. with former Chairman William Denman, was forced out of the Emerc ency Fleet Corporation following a controversy which seriously Interfer ed with the plans of the Government to furnish a fleet of American mer chant vessels to replace those sunk by German submarines. Wood rrffrm Abandoned. "No contracts for any more wooden ships are contemplated at the present time. For the time beins the wooden hip program Is abandoned," was. the only official word Issued on the sub ject. But It was learned from an ex cellent source that the board Is prac tically unanimous that wooden ves sels are an unnecessary makeshift and would be of no use to this Gov ernment. Chairman Hurley, of the commis sion, after a complete Investigation of the entire subject, has come to the conclusion. It Is learned, that the pro posed wooden ship is surpassed in every way for war service, and for subsequent peace use, by those con structed of steel. He Is understood to have taken the position that money spent on wooden craft of low speed would simply be wasted. And his sen tlments have now the Indorsement of a majority of the commission and of practically all of the commission's ex perts. Te Tet Contracts Today- Contracts have been prepared by the Emergency Fleet Corporation for the construction of three Government owned shipyards. These will be sent to the secretary of the board by Ad miral Capps today for signature. At the same time contracts will be sign ed for the construction of 200 ships In the yards. These ships will be built of fabricated steel. Contracts which are to be signed today call for 135,000,000 for ship yards. These contracts have been approved by the shipping board and the Emergency Fleet Corporation and the matter of signature Is merely a formal proceeding. .
