Letters and documents the old man's cabinets and state ments said to have been made to neighbor.. Indicate that when he sep arated from his wife he left with her practically all of her fortune. Dr. Chamberlain, the brother held in the jail here charged with the mur der of his own brother, has been moved to the same cell that was oc cupied by Henry Clay Beatty, electro cuted for wife murder. The cell is doubic locked and is removed from & window. Sheriff Fydnor stated today that the doctor's suspenders and every other article in his cell that might figure I in a suicide attempt have been -re- 1 moved. Doctor's Wife Wires. t Nothing has heartened the old doc- I tor mnr than th. ralnt nf Inrnm.. tion that his child wife of twenty years had reached Kearney. Neb., safely. He thanked Jail officials for the information and stated that he had asked Attorney Murray McGuire, who is temporarily In charge of his case, to write to his wife and one of his daughters by a former wife, who is said to reside with her husband In Council Bluffs, Iowa. Dr. Chamberlain took, his wife to the railroad station on the day pre ceding the murder and stated that he would follow her later to Nebraska to spend the winter. In a telegram to authorities here, Mrs. Chamberlain ex pressed surprise at hearing of the murder of the attorney and the accu sation against her husband. Whether Murray MeOulre or Harry M. Smith will defend Dr. Chamberlain In the event he Is Indicted by a Goochland county grand Jury and held for trial Is not definitely known. McGuire. who was first called Into the case, stated that since most of his practice was of a civil nature, he suggested that Mr. Smith, who de fended Henry Clay Beatty, be re tained. Both Smith and McGuire have held several conferences with Chamber lain In his celL The most significant statement yet made by either was that of Attorney Smith, who declared that "no man could possibly have committed the crime and have been sane." This statement la taken by many to mean that in Insanity plea will be relied on by the defense In the event the doctor Is Indicted and the case goes to trial. Goochland county citizens are de manding a special session of the grand Jury to Investigate the case. They want It speedily disposed of. It is the opinion of Sheriff Massle and other court officials that the case will not be taken up until the December term. Judge Mullowny, in the District branch of Police Court today cut the Gordlan knot squarely in two, and heavily fined both Robert L. Haugh and William Armstrong, of 4112 K street northwest .in the first case of the kind to arise on the Potomac river here. Under the old law there was no pro vision covering watereraft. The new law puts the penalty upon the man "In charge." Harbor Master Russell Dean testified that. In his opinion, both men were in charge, as one was steering and the other at the engine Judge Mullowny fined them $100 each. The arrest was made yesterday afternoon by Policeman Totten. The boat was drifting aimlessly about In midstream, but before he conld reach it the craft floated up against the seawall, and one man and a woman escaped. Stefa, The Mexican Problem By C. W. Barron Author of "THE AUDACIOUS WAR" In 1B14, Mr. Barron went to Europe soon after the breaking out of the War, to find Its causes and probable duration. His book "The Audacious War" was the first to clearly set forth the Hohen zollern ambitions and the world peace that must ultimately result from their defeat. When the Allies fuel oil base In Mexico seemed endangered. Mr. Barron went to Tampico to Investigate the oil situation. He found a larger problem and devoted himself to a study of the ques tion of what would redeem Mexico. The result is his book "The Mexican Problem." Don't miss the strong; poem, the clear foreword and the illuminating introduction of Dr. Talcott Williams. From these you will learn history and the causes of all wars as you never found them set forth elsewhere. Edwin Markham, the poet, writes the author as follows: " have read with interest your volume, 'The Mexican Problem.' It gives a large view of the struggles, the needs, and the possibilities of this sister-land. It is an immense cosmic enterprise this amalgamating into one nation a people of so many races and tongues, a people that has never got into step with modern progress, a people with no security of life, labor, or liberty. You have thrown light Upon some of the dark problems to be worked out by destiny; and you have given an exhilarating vision of what Mexico could be, if rightly ordered, protected and educated she took her true place in the sun. "I agree with you that her salvation must be thru the redemption of 'the man with the hoe' and in the practice of the brotherhood of man. You will agree with me, I know, that life is now left too much to the direction of chance and chaos. Out of the earth comes all our sustenance, and each one should have access to the bounty of this our common heritage. Be the medium the gold, the wheat, the oil, still they are in the ground and labor must turn the product into human use. And when men finally organize a providence in human industry as they have in war, we will discover the Golden Rule as the working principle of life, and God will then have a working-form on earth. "You have done a distinguished piece of work in giving us this view of Mexico 'close up.' I wish ivith you that these United States might be to Mexico as France once was to us, an arm to lean upon and a heart to trust. Our brother-love, better than our bayonets, can help to guide Mexico toward the march of civilization. "Again my thanks for your writings." In the reaction that followed Steel common sold down from 98! 4 to 03 '.4; Canadian Pacific from 137 to 135; Ma rine preferred from 101 to 09. and American Sugar from 100 to 01 i. General motors sold off from 93 U to 8T. Indications pointed to a more con structive market when trading quiet ed. Setting of minimum prices In the Pittsburgh Stock Exchange had no effect here, as Pittsburgh prices npply to local Issues. Prominent brokers believe the short sales ruling will come after forced selling orders have been ex ecuted. Trading was quiet in the second hour. Prices were firm, excitement having disappeared.
