WAR PROGRAM
FOE PROPAGANDA
IN ITALY ROUTED
BY U. S. RED CROSS
The American Red Cross nipped a

Italy's first severe reverses, accord
lng to a cable from ia,or"..SIurphy to
Chairman Davison, of the Red CrnsaJ
War Council.
Spies were rapidly spreading the
work that America waa unfriendly to
Italy, didn't care, wbq,bappened to
her, and was afraid to antagonise
Austria. The people believed the
stories. Major Murphy's graphic
cable speaks for Itself:
"When wo. reached Italy refugees

Indescribably pathetic conditions, ex-j

"A vlcfons propaganda had spread
the report that Amerlcar was not
friendly to Italy; that we were not
Interested In the war ana even inav
we were afraid to antagonize Aus
tria, as well as Germany.
"America apparently had no avail

was not in session. Our army could
not act. Fortunately, however, the
Red Cross was in a position not onlyi
to respond Immediately to the can
of the suffering; but also to carry
the message of the American people
to Italy In the hour of her distress.
"Working; in conjunction with out
own State Department and the Italian
government, we used every available
means of supply and distribution to
assist the ally of our country. T. -In
approximately-two weeks after our
arrival we had established ware,
housej a-d branch warehouses -to
supply all Important points.
"We opened shelters for homeless
women and children.
"We distributed condensed milk to
little children.
"We dispatched three emergency
workers on a tour of Italy, with 500,
000 lire In small bank notes, to give
Immediate' aid where it was needed.
"At the presentation of our first
th.-ee ambulance sections to the Ital
ian army through the general of the
division, there were represented our
own state Department, the rrencn
army, the British army, the Italian
Red Cross, and the military sanitary
department of the government. As
our sections passed through the
streHs on their way to the front,
after the ceremony, the streets were
filled with enthusiastic crowda and
American flags everywhere.
"Whatever else wo may have done
or failed to do we have raised the
American fag from one end of Italy
to the other, and, our youngsters to
day are doing their part in helping
to hold the Plave line."
