ID LABOR ON
EARBY FARMS
By BILL rniCK.
Commissioner Gardiner is one of a
number of IVashlnntonians who have
, been or will this week be laboring
for their country and themselves in
harvesting' the ripened wheat crop for
many miles around this city. Report
from all directions are that wheat is
rejady for cutting and shocking and
that labor is dangerously short.
Many farmers have already been
able to cut ttieir wheat, and their
problem from now on is finding the
Jabor to get it threshed. The season
has been very good up to this time
for cutting and curing.
Gardiner Harvests 'Wheat.
Commissioner Gardiner and his em
ployes on his Prince George'scounty
farm began cutting wheat last week.
the Commissioner taking a lively-part
in the activities, which, as on all
farms, begin at daylight and con
clude at dark some little day's work
In these long daylight hours.
Dr. Harvey Wiley has had to turn
away from delving Into pure food
problems and give physical aid and
direction to operations on his Vir
ginia farm. His seventy-four years
have not prevented his hustling on
the farm. A few months ago farm
help was so scarce he was compelled
to abandon pure food facts and fan
cies here and put in three das sow
ing clover.
A. C, McElroy. .of the National
I-aundry. has had a call from his
Anne Arundel county farm for his
personal services this week in cut
ting wheat. The crop, as everywhere
lse around, Washington, has ripened
a week to ten days ahead of any other
crop-in many years. In the hill and
mountain regions lying northwest of
he eJ.tr cutting wheat will be in or-
ier irom tne last 01 mis wee uum
thCTast of next and later
Tha err from all directions Is for
help, offering an opportunity for
many Boy Scouts and high school
boys to do some genuine work for
their country and themselves.
Boy Scout officials In Washington,
it was suggested today by those In
touch with farm conditions, might at
once obtain volunteers for farm work
nnd get In communication with farm
ers who want the services of young-.
' eters. The great trouble Is that
farmers who need help do not know
pvhere,to go to get In touch with
vlllinr ooys and how to transport
this labor when offered. Reports are
almost unanimous from all directions
' that husky farm labor Is fast disap-
r-earinc.-, The young men are either
icing drawn Into the army or have
tone to the cities hunting more re-
pjnuneratlve employment.
Yalnnteera Xeeded mt Once.
The most Important thing for Gov
- eminent officials and Boy Scouts
iieads today Is to call quickly for vol-l-jiteers
from boys from sixteen to
twenty who are willing to aid in the
jiresent crisis and then get in touch
vlth farmers through various meth
ods. The need for service will grow
greater through the summer and fall.
Truck farmers around Washington
those men who supply the markets
Jiore with fresh vegetables say they
jiould use many sturdy lads if they
Jinew where and how to get them.
The trucking belt for Washington
xims for fifteen miles In all directions
irom this city, as far away as farmer
)e&a grow crops and get them here
without losing too much time on the
1-oad. There is plenty of work to do
now for all the labor that can be had
Jn gathering the early vegetable that
nxe maturing beets, carrots, beans,
Vquash, lettuce, cabbage, etc. In a
fjhort time tomatoes will be. ripening
Ipng with all the later vegetables

Blackberries are beginning to ripen
and early apples are awaiting labor to
take them o the trees.
All these things arc going to cost
Washington people much money If labor
is not found to pick and gather, put in
boxes, barrels, and crates. The high
price for the recent strawberry- croy was
due to inability to put on the market all
of the luscious berries on the vines. The
less the truck farmer is able to bring
in the higher will be the cost of every
thing the people must have to subsist on.
