Dept. j Steps to register public protest Against the proposal to Increase the tax on theater admissions from 10 to JO per cent were taken by Washing ton theatrical managers today. Peti tions were circulated among theater patrons and stage speakers urged the audiences to register their protect against the proposed tax increase by writing to their representatives in Congress. Cards were distributed at the Na tional Theater by Manager Harry Raplev on which patrons were asked to sign their names with the purpose in view of sending them to the Con gressional committee which are to decide whether the new tax shall be levied or not. At the Gayety Theater a big petition was framed in the lobby and almost without exception patrons affixed their names and addresses as they entered the house. Art*n Stund Appeal a. Members of companies appearing here this week continued their ap peals to audiences last night to regis-* ter protests against the tax. Speeches wsre made from the stage At Poll's, the Shubert-Belasco, the Shubert Garrick, the Cosmos axid the G?.yet>'. Two more protests from Washing ton theater managers were added to day to the list that voiced their dis approval of the proposed new tax yesterday. ^They were from Manager Hapley. of the National, and R. S. Uob bins, of B. F. Keith's Theater. "If the new tax goes into effect it will serve to cheapen the drama," saidj Mr. Rapley. "Theaters will be forced to put on cheaper productions at the higher prices. The disastrous effects of such a tax as is now propor^d by Congress cannot be overestimated." "A terrible mistake," was the way Manager Robbins. of B. F. Keith's ( Theater, expressed his disapproval of the proposed increase. "Meaas Len Re-venae*." "When a 20 per cent burden is placed on a business at the outset it; is crippled beyond any hope of re covery unless extraordinary condi tions prevail which might in some manner make up for this loss." he said. "I know of no surer way for the Government to collect less reve-1 nues than by this proposed increase of tax. People who now object to pay ing the present war tax on the ground that the war is over, are cer tainly not going to pay the increased tax. "Show business in general is not any too good now. Many companies have not gone on the road on account of high passenger rates, and other excessive charges and the influenza epidemic spelled disaster in many cities to managers, house owners, and performers, alike. An increase in the ticket tax now would cause many theaters to shut down their doors. I think the whole matter the most un wise step that could be taken to get more revenue for the Government." IP. HICKMAN FILLS Thomas P. Hickman is today vice president of the Franklin National Bank, and will fill this post in addi tion to that of cashier of the institu tion.
