THE WASHINGTON TIMES, TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 1919. 10,000 at St. Patrick's Day Meeting Applaud Irish Freedom Demand 'Vashington advocates of Irish free dom and independence are hostile to a league of nation, that does not pro pose emancipation of the Emerald Isle rom British rule. This was the unmistakable senti ment reflected in resolutions adopted last night at a mass meeting in Lib erty Hut under auspices of the United Irish Societies of the Dibtrict. The event was the climax of the National Capital's celebration of at. Patrick's Day. Ten thousand people cheered a." Rossa F. Downing, a recognized leader 1n the Irish movement in "Washing ton, presented resolutions to the mass raeeting protesting against any league of nations plan which does not-stand for Irish freedom. There was a. chorus of "ayes" as Mr. Down ing put the resolution. Every seat and all standing room was taken by the crowd that had as sembled to hear the addresses of for mer Senator Joseph Y" Bailey. Han ttls Taylor and others. All assailed England's rule of Ireland and de manded the Question of Irish inde pendence be considered in the making of peace. It was the most enthusiastic meet ing' ever held in the interest of Irish freedom here and there was almost constant applause as the speakers extolled the virtues of Ireland and her sons and daughters. Resolutions Adopted. At the conclusion of former Senator Bailey's address Mr. Downing offered these resolutions: "We, the citizens of the United States, kindred and friends of the Irish nation, assembled in our own Capital, solemnly reaffirm, our loyalty to the fundamental American princi ple of uncoerced national sovereignty, and resolve: "That we extend our congratula tions to the Irish people upon the re establishment of their national sov ereignty in the Irish republic : "Further, that wc urge upon our President at the peace conference to champion the right of the Irish peo ple to take their ancient place of honor among the nations; "And wc declare ojyrgclcs unable to repose any confidence in the sin cerity in the effective operation of any league of nations which would impair the traditional principles and the policies of thiB republic or fails tc secure to Ireland at once the full est independence and comradeship in that league." Condemns League Covenants P T. Moran presided at the meeting and made an address, extolling the part played by Irish sons in the win ring of the world war. Senator Bailey followed with an eloquent ad dress, in which he condemned the league of nations as it is at present constituted and declared he is not for any pact which would recognizo the independence of Poland above the in dependence of Ireland "You may search all history back back to the twilight of myth and fable." said Mr. Bailey, "and you will hnd no people who have been more steadfast in their loyalty to the cause of national freedom than the Irish. My answer to the often-heard fallacy that the Irish people are incapable of J self-government is that they have fcnown tnemseives capaoie oi govern ing other countries why not their own." Other speakers were: Hannis Tay lor, former United States minister to Spain; P. J. Ryan, Washington attor ney, and Miss Katherine Hughes, of the Irish National Bureau Miss Ag nes Whelan. accompanied by Miss Margaret Archer, and Ambrose Dler kin, sang Irish songs Instrumental music was furnished by the band from the Naval Gun Factory BOY TAKES FURS SEES M A N Y G E R M A N .S.
