HOME -LAND
By RONALD S. O'NEILL
In travels far and wide over this land of liberty and of
light, I have seen and admired much of its scenic grandeur.
I have heard the lappings of the broad Atlantic on peace
ful New England shores and have watched the sun sink
in splendor behind the Golden Gale. I have tramped the
beautiful valley of the Chiceutimi, away up in upper
Quebec, where the railroad time-tables read like a litany
of the saints. I have known the awe and wonder of the
human mind that sees but cannot fathom the infinite!
mysteries of the Colorado's canyon, and yef I say, with
all of the fervor of an adopted son's admiring heart, that
nowhere is the bird's song sweeter, nowhere is the grass
greener or the sky more perfect blue than here in the
city of Washington.
Home of liberty and of light; source and center of
the majesty and power of the world's greatest govern
ment Washington is and must ever be the hub of the
world's activity. Its history gives splendid promise of
its future! Its past has been an overlapping of achieve
ment upon achievement; of growth upon growth; of pres
tige upon prestige. Its present has been the scene of the
splendid fruition of the most stupendous undertakings in
the world's history. Its future is resplendent with,
promise!
But the lasting glory of Washington must rest on
the content and happiness of its people. Shorn of its
trappings and its tinsel a nation or a city must stand
or fall, in the final test, upon the patriotism and stability
of its populace.
History admits of no contradiction to the assertion
that a nation's or a city's stability rests upon the num
ber of its home owners. "The home is the foundation of
the State." The home owner is its sinccrest patriot, its
most substantial asset.
There can be no loftier ambition, no more praise
worthy achievement than for every man to own his own
home. In this day and age of opportunity, home owning
amounts almost to a duty. The earth is our common
heritage. Men are the only real kings and all the land
of the earth is their domain. Purpose thrift perhaps
some sacrifice are necessary, but every man can, if he
will, own his own home. What better spot on God's foot
stool upon which to own YOUR own home, than here in
the Capital of America the Capital of the World.
