BALTIMORE IN PANIC WHEN LION ESCAPES BALTIMORE, Sept 11 An escaped lion caused a Danlc late Tuesday night when he escaped from his cage at the circus of the Keystone Expo sition Shows, Highlandtown. About three hundred persons were witnessing the performance when the lion got out of his cage and started doing an act all of his own about the one ring. Most of the 300 ran from the tent. After roaring defi antly the Hon dashed out on Seventh street, where he proved himself mon arch of all he surveyed. Persons sitting on their steps fled to their homes and pedestrians scrambled for places of safety. One man climbed an electric light pole, and in Imminent danger of being shocked by the eleqtrlc wire, hung on to his precarious perch until the lion was captured. The Hon was finally subdued with clubs, lassoes and pistols. Last night the lion was not part of the show, and an extra guard was placed before his cage. BOY DIBS FROM SNAKE BITE. HUNTINGTON, W. Kendrlck of '"Wyoming, who was the speaker at the flrat of the City Club's series of "Wednesday luncheon talks, given yes terday at tho club's temporary borne on Farragut square. "Every kind of economic law known should be applied to perniit the people of Washington to live as cheaply aa those elsewhere," said Senator Ken drlck, "but when that io done the Capital should not permit its name to be dishonored by slanderous charges of profiteering that are baseless. "So-called profiteering has to me assumed a rather ridiculous aspect People with moderate incomes, it is true, have been severely punished by the high prices. But it is a huge Joke that those who have beer getting the highest 'prices for their goods should clamor when those from whom they buy likewise try to get the highest possible prices. Most persons are willing to get all they can for the gobds they sell, and yet they rail against, the high prices of others and expect them to sell at pre-war prices. Harm Dose By Charge. "A great deal of harm doubtless has been done by some of the charges against abnormal rents here. It is doubtful whether the proposed solu tion of the rent problem .here will lower rents much, but it will give full publicity to actual conditions and will remove the atmosphere of doubt that has befogged the situation. "This Is no day or pessimism hore or anywhere Th the country. Ameri cans are not the kind to quit bhert of accomplishment. The nation has abundant resources, and optimism should be shown on all side." Senator Kendrlck made a plea for greater co-operat.on between nsto bers of Congress and the citizens, of Washington, and ie pledged his sup por in helping solve the cltyj prob lems. ' "During the past two and a half years." he said, "I have upent moat cf my time in Washington, and yet if I had been Nasked befcra vleMing the City Club tor nine hulf a dozen Washington business men I do net think I would have been able to do it. "It is lamentable that the members of Congress are not better acquainted with the people of the Capital City over which they have control. Thero should be a better understanding and a closer co-operation between Gov ernment offlclals and the citizens of Washington. ' Selfishness Denounced. "The development of Washington in the past has not always been on the magnificent scale that was in the minds of its designers, and these deviations usually have been for sel fish purposes. It Is little short of in famous that selfish interests should operate against the development of the Capital along the most generous lines." Senator Kendrlck was introduced by' J. A. Whitfield president of the club, as one of the big business men of the West and a Senator to whom the city would be glad to look for co-operation In the settlement of the Capital's problems. DOCTORS UNIONIZE TOCETMORE'KALE' NEW YORK, Sept. 11. With the organization yesterday of 250 phy sicians of the Bronx, the suggestion of a strike of doctora was held forth as the latest ramification of 'unrest. The new organization, yet unnamed. Is seriously considering applying fdr affiliation with the American Federation of Labor. Dr. Gertrude Greensteln said In ex planation of the union movement that many of the physicians in the cjty are having a struggle to make living. Their principal grievances are that patients are taken away by dispensaries, which treat persons as charity cases when they are able to pay doctors. Another complaint Is that doctors employed by societies are are not amply paid. The Bronx group 'is now organiz ing the doctors of East New York and propose to extend the union throughout the city. Asked whether a strike was possible. Dr. Greensteln aaid she could not answer until a vote of all physicians had been taken. Reminded that the doctor's oath com pels him to save and protect human life, she admitted that fact might be a deterrent against striking.
