with tin' demand the) be incorpora- |
led in the plalfoints of both parties, i
George I*. Hampton, mtnugins direc
tor of the KarmerM' National Council,
nnnouncrd hi'|n today.
The main plank* in the platform
are: Government ownership und con
trol of the railroad"; Government
ownership of the merchant marine;
packer control legislation; payment of
the war debt by taxing war protits
and excessive Incomes, a tax on land
and other natural resources held for
a peculation rtnd a rapidly progressing
ta\~ on the capital value of properly
with an exemption of >1*5,000, and
Icgislat ion providing cheap and ade
quate credit for farmers.
I rgea I'eraonal liberty.
The platform also demands legisla
tion exempting farmers' co-operative
organisations from prosecution un
der the anti-trust laws; the "restora
tion of personal liberty" by j-epeal
of III** espionage and sedition acta
passed during the war and the "end
ing of militarism." .
Hampton In letters to Will Mays,
chairman of the Republican National
Committee, and Chairman Homer
Cummins*, of the Democratic Na
tional Committee, declares the people
should give political parties instruc
tions and "if political parties follow
those Instructions they are entitled to
the support of the people, otherwise
they arc not."
"The farmers demand that the ships
built with the people's money shall
remain the property of the people,"
he writes.
Favor C. S. Ownership,
"The first demand of the farmers is
for Government ownership and demo
cratic control of the railroads, be
cause the three months' tragic experi
ence since the first of March with pri
vate competitive operation of the rail
roads lias driven home to every
thoughtful American that such opera
tion of the railroads is not only un
democratic, but uneconomic.
"The farmers claijn that the con
centration of the credit of the coun
try in the hands of a little group of
financiers is un American and is
throttling agriculture as well as in
dustry, and demand legislation and
measures to make credit as chcap and
available to agriculture as to any
other equally responsible and repu
table business."
