Commander Robinson's report -on the New Mexico feitowst. The New Mexieq hay been operating for neatly a year. in company with two sister ships, the Idaho and Mis sissippi. which have hulls identical with that of the New. ,Mexico. Dur ing this time it has been possible to get an accurate comparison of the relative economy of the three ships And also the relative maneuvering qualities. In the latter respect. the New Mexico is decidely superior, and the remArkable part of it is that pearly all of the maneuvering in re Atricted waters has been done with our turbo-senerator. When this installation was first posed. Its opponents maintained , while a ship like the Jupiter could be satisfactorily operated with the screws on both sides of the shi6 running at exactly the same speed. it would not be possible to get sat isfactory operation with that' ar rangement on a ship which had to operate in formation. But exactly the reverse' has proved to be true; it has been found that more satisfactory operation I. obtained when -using one generator than when using two, and it is customary, when in dangerous waters where it is desired to take all possible precautions. to use one gen erator for driving the ship and to keep the other turning over idle If the ship is getting under Say from an anchorage and has to turn, as soon as the anchor is away the signal is given for standard speed ahead on one side and the same speed astern on the other: with this ar rangement the ship will turn abso lutely on her heel without gaining ground either sl'"ad or astern; with .-r engines. where it is not pos sible to reguwte usa speed so quickly and accurately, the probability of get ting speed on the ship in one direction or the other is much greater. All the predictions in regard to trouble oss account of the condition that when operating with one generator the screws on both sides of the ship must be run at the same speed (if run at all) have proven to be groundless. GREAT ECONOMY. IAi regard to the comparison of economies the results have been very favorable to the New Mexico. The Idaho and Mississippi are fitted with direct-connected turbines (one Is Par ions and the other Curtis and have geared cruising turbines: the Idaho can use her cruising turbines at all speeds up to about 17 knots and the e Definit Applicati Service )n of "Service" as giver he act of serving; any w benefit of another; a pi arve." mn a mere definition is n -isfaction-there must in principles set forth ther act, as defined, must be < o assure that satisfactior siness at hand. things electrical it is necessar iser have free access to the fling electrical, goods has to of electrical dealers are only to performed' for the benefit of :over the possibilities of a cert ionstrated by an expert electr e to have first-hand informatic time, labor, and money nect Ls explained by an electrical e> -ng;-do you want an electr your home; or do you wish repaired ? A cemperises of the New Mexico with these ships Is therefore particularly interestlg at the lower speeds. The advocates of electric propulpion have always claimed that it was au perior to all other forms of propulsion at cruising speeds, but even the most enthusiastic of these have been sur prised by the remarkable showing made) This is doubtless due to the fact that no one made suffidient allowance for the saving due to shutting down one turbine generator sets and all the auxiliaries that go with one of the condunsing plants. At a aspeed of 10 knots the New Mexico uses about 16.7 per cent less oil than her sister ships, or, putting it another way, her sister ships use about 20 per cent more than the New Mexico; at 13 knots the figures are 39.9 per cent or 42.7 per cent; at 16 knots the figures are 32.3 per cent or 47.6 per cent; at 19 knots the figures are 23.6 per cent or 40.1 per cent; at full power the figures are 24.4 per cent or 32.2 per cent. At 19 knots and also at full power the New Mexico uses about .$70 pounds of oil per shaft horsepower. and at 16 knots she only uses 1.1 pounds of oil per shaft horsepower per hour. This is a remarkable uni form economy. . RELIABILITY OF MA(HilRY. In regard to the reliability of the machinery, the New Mexico has had nothing but the most minor troubles with her electric plant, and there have been no navy repairs whatever; there has been one serious accident to the steam part of the machinery which required work to be done by a navy yard. but that was due entirely to a mechanical defect. Due to improper construction of the main governor, one of the weights became detached while the turbine generator was running without load; the turbine ran away and operated the emergency governorwhich tripped the throttle, but the latter did not entirely close and the turbine ran at over-speed sufficiently to stretch the turbine wheels and the entire motor had to be replaced. The governor has been changed and additional.oer-speed protection given by arranging for the emergency gov ernor to close the admission valves as well as the main throttle. The ma chinery has been in operation nearly a year since repairs were completed and no further trouble has developed. In conclusion, it may be said that the performance of th/ .ew Mexico since commissioning has been en tirely satisfactory in every way, and that the expectations of those who were responsible for its installation have been more than realized. ion Wa) Leadi -That Elec Sin the Capita Franklin 451 >rk per of essedAp Main 7320. 'A good water supply, a complete sewage disposal plant and efective heating and lighting systems consti tute the four prime utilities of the farm home, declares Farmers' Bull. tin No. $41. issued by the Department of Agriculture. To secure these ends in great pneasure thought and plan ning are necessary. Electricity on the farm is not a lua ury, but a necessity and it pays. It pays to have buildings and crops safe. It pays to have drudgery done by an electric motor and it pays to have the farm home bright and cheerful. de clares the Society for Electtical De velopment. New York. MUST OUSERVE .ADOR. The present time is one to consider every means of conserving farm labor Farm work may never be easy, but it can be made much 'asier and more profitable by the use of electricity. Counting up the hours spent in hand milking, cream separating. churning, washing, sweeping, pumping water and other farm chores, there is an amazing total of wasted time and effort. The average farm woman works a few minutes more than thirteen hours out of the twenty-four during the summer and her daily average for the year is eleven hours and eight een minutes. Half of the women on the farms are at work at 5 a. m. Briefly, here are some of the duties of the farm woman who has noelec tric light or power at her disposal: On a farm where lamps are-used, cleaning the burner's and trimming the wicks is a disagreeable job that takes an hour of work a day. Elec tricity offers a much better light and an immediate reduction in the fire insurance rate. Next to electric light and its safety value is the great promise or freedom from water troubles. In the farm house a good water supply is an abso lute necessity, saving time in the kitche and the milkhouse. Without runnink water in the barn the cows and horses must be driven t , the brook twice daily, taking tw, hours of high-priced labor. or sixty hours a month. Water is one of the -oast im portant things that the electri- plant brings to' the farm home and 'o the barn. MOTORS HELP ON FARM. The modern a farmer knows that he can me longer rely on hired help at all times, but that he must put more trust in ma chinery operated by electric power. A second survey of the situation of the farm woman has just been made under the direction of Miss Florence M. Ward for the Department of Agri culture Ia her report which Secre tary Meredith has approved. Miss Ward points out that aide from the justice and principle ,fnvolved. it is faulty econo nice to overburden the women workers when help on thu farm Is so hard to get. "At a time like thi." she says. 'when the dearth of farm labor is a limiting factor in production. It is a doubtful business policy for farmers to use increased income to buy more land instead of using part of it in raising standards of living." ' MAKES FLEC[RICTY DO ALL HIS FARM CHORES Forehanded farmers all over the country are lighting their homes and barns with an electric power and light outfit. Electric water systems. washing machines. cream separators and other appliances are run by a power and light plant, saving timet and much work, not only for the farmer but for the farmer's wife. "It seems to me." remarked Willis Cornell, of Baldwinsville. N. Y.. "that a farmer's main purpose in getting a light and power plant ought to be power, plenty of power. Any man knows what excess power in a motor car means on hills, but that isn't half as important as ample power In a farm plant. You can go up a hill on second, but your farm work goes down hill unless you have enough power to run machinery. So when you think bf electricity, don't think of light and stop there. Of course. the light is mighty handy, but it is the extra powerful' outfit that saves time and money. "With Its extra capacity engine and ample generator, the outfit I have on my farm is an economy be cause it will do all the big and little chores around the place. If you have a gas or kerosene engine you know what a valve-in-head motor does to give more power, and how important it is to have an oiling system that works for sure. With my power and, light outfit I have an engine that runs smoothly. when I want It to run and develop power aplenty to rificen August Sale a ?Reductioi 'to introduce to u this mo i emphasize the tact that th to offer quality merchandia N I the largest and most represer in 'Washington.
