EIGHT MODERN
PIRATES TO EE
PUT 01 lH
Russians, Said to Be Com
munists, Will Be Ar
raigned in France.
MARSEILLES, June 30. ? A |
modern pirate story will reach its
last chapter in the courts here
soon, when eight Russians, claim
ing to be Communists and enemies
of society, will be arraigned on
charges of plundering and dis
mantling the French nteamsmp
Squirah in the Black sea, on the
night of May 6, 1920.
Take Over Ship.
The Squirah was on her way from
Bateum to Trebizond when a Raw? of
I twenty men, who had taken pus^aK#
I aboard her, held up the crew at the
I point of a revolver, rot>t>etr the pa?
i sengers aod ransacked the ship.
They dismantled the wireless and
finallv forced the engineer to steer
for shore, where they made good
their escape.
It was 8 o'clock in the evening and
the Squirah was three hours out
of Batoum and in midsea when two
men leaped onto the bridge, revolvers
in hands, and held up the navigating
officer and first officer.
The latter shouted for help, but
when the captain arrived he found
himself face to face with two other
bandits, revolvers leveled.
Simultaneously two more bandits
made for the wireless cabin, where
the operator had locked himself in,
The hold up men forced the door,
dismantled the wireless and thrtw
the batteries overboard.
The chief engineer, armed with a |
rifle, tried to reach the captain for
orders, but a volley from the band.,8
made it evident that it was impos
sible. while the noise from the shots
spread panic among the passengers,
who ran frantically about the decks.
Out of touch with one another, the
ship's officers were unable to direct
the course of the boat and the cap
I tain was forced under threat of death
I to steer the ship according to the
I dictates of the hold-up men.
While six men held the crew
others ransacked the cabins, opening
everything, slitting trunks and hand
Imgs with knives. The plunderers
then piled all the loot Into the sacks.
At midnight, after four hours' ran
sacking, the holdup men announced
that their task was completed.
The boat, was then off Koppa
where, according to the plans of the
holdup men. a motor boat was to
meet them and take them ashore,
but there being no motor boat in
sight the chief of the gang ordered
the captain to lower the lifeboats
and row them ashore with th'-ir
boot J'.
The captain refused to leave his
ship, but the remaining officers were
obliged to carry out the bandit's
orders. Once ashore the bandits dis
appeared in the thick of a forest
where they proceeded to divide the
spoils. Kach received 200,000 rubles
as his share, the division of the re
maining spoils being left to the fol
lowing day.

Boy, of 9 Kills Child
Who Called Him
Names
KANSAS CITY. Mo., June 30.
?Two boys nine and ten years
old, went hunting yesterday with
a rusty old rifle they found in a
storeroom.
They saw Peter Carramusa,
nine years old, in his front yard.
"Hi, monkey face." was Pete's
greeting. The taunt angered
the young hunters.
"If you call us that again,"
?warned the boy with the rifle,
"I'll shoot you.
'Monkey face," droned Pete.
The boy with the rifle raised
and pointed it. He pulled the
trigger. Pete ran to the house
screaming.
George Hulburt," who carried
the rifle, turned to his older com
panion, Shertruin Hanna.
'Well, did you see me pick him
off?" he admits saying. "Tell
me I ain't a good shot." |
The two boys strolled away, ^
left the rifle with an acquaint
ance and went swimming. They
were arrested on the banks of
a creek while "drying off."
Peter was rushed to the Gen
eral Hospital, where he died.

HIS BUDGET JOB1
FOR BUBS
General Believes He Proved
Government Can Be Run
Economically.
Charleg 6. Dawes, the dynamic
director of the Budget in its first
experimental year, wound up his
official duties in Washington today
and prepared to "go back home" to
Chicago to re-engage in private busi-1
noss.
"And I'm not packing up my
troubles in my old kit bag, either,"
General Dawes Informed friends.
"I'm leaving 'em behind me."
The heavy work of getting the
budget system under way has, how
ever, been accomplished, General
Dawes believes.
"The first year has been the
hardest."
One thing that has been demon-*
strated fully, he said, has been that
the Federal Government can be run
more efficiently and economically
than a private business, provided
that serious efforts and sincere co
operation are forthcoming.
General Dawes had a farewell con
ference scheduled with President
Harding for this afternoon at the
White House. For a full hour he
planned to discuss with the t'hlef
Executive the budget system and the
future governmental business out
look.
General Dawes will be a guest of
