To venerate the memory of the late Phoebe Apperson Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst, an or ganisation numbering among Its members leaders in the public and Intellectual Ufe of California, will erect a memorial, probably In form of a large fountain. In the future. Announcement to this effect made today by the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Memorial Association. Mrs. John Hays Hammond Is honorary chairman of the body. Mrs. Hearst during her lifetime I was known throughout the country and particularly In California, where she made her home, for her philan thropic work. The University of California received large sums of money, many valuable works of art, and Hearst Hall,- recently destroyed by fire, as evidence of her Interest In education. Kunde for the memorial will be raised through popular subscrip tions. A circular aent today throughout the State follows: "Phoebe Apperson Hearst served this community with a lifetime of devotion. 8he gave not alone of her wealth but of her time and her strength to every cause that offered the promise of better "ondltlons.
