The departed spirit of Lucy Long has started on its last journey. Lucy Long, Chinese woman, known to opium smokers through out the intermountain territory as “Mamma,” and notorious in Salt Lake as a dealer in poppy dreams, was given the most unusual funeral this community has witnessed since the days of the frontier. And as her relatives mourned si lently in their Oriental stoicism, hundreds of Americans, some friends and ’others of the idly cu rious type, passed before the bier, while Department of Justice opera tives, Federal narcotic officers and uniformed and plain clothes police men watched every move among certain strange Chinese onlookers. Tong men from Butted Mont., be lieved to be of a rival faction to that which Lucy Long Was a mem ber, wore reported in attendance at the services. Her society, the Bing Gung Tong, wag to charge of the funeral. The ancient Chinese funeral rite was observed, oven to the scatter ing of coins along the streets and the disposal of bags containing brown sugar “to bring sweetness after bitterness.” Lucy Long had been under both Federal and State charges many times, only recently being freed from a Government indictment al leging possession of narcotics. Her physical condition and age wm such as to make prosecution and conviction almost impossible. The woman is In the Uniontown Hospital in a critical condition. SPERRY’S FRIEND SOARS OVER SHIP BRINGING BODY NEW YORK, Feb. 15.—When Lawrence B. Sperry, aviator, sailed for Europe, his pal, Lieut. Clyde Finter, of the Army Air Service, promised to meet him in a plane when he returned. Sperry tried to fly over the -English Channel in a tiny plane, fell and was drowned. When the Berengaria, with Sperry’s body aboard, steamed up the bay from quarantine, Lieu tenant Finter circled In his service plane above the liner until she docked, and then soared away to his airdrome.
