INQUIRY BEGINS IN STEAMER WHECK Officials Investigate Sinking of Gratitude in Harbor at Norfolk NORFOLK, Va., July 38~Offl cial investigation of the sinking of tha excursion steamer Gratitude on Crany island flats, Norfolk harbor, late Saturday night, in which the lives of 300 passengers were endan gered, got under way today. The Gratitude, which struck a water-logged derelict that had floated into the Inside channel, lies half submerged, with her decks awash and her stern buried In the mud. Captain McHorney, of the Gratitude, says the derelict was not marked with a buoy light The excursion steamer was re turning to Norfolk with employes of the Texas Oil Company and their families after an outing at James town Island. T. L. Hughes, of New York, and a Norfolk woman are the only per sons seriously injured. Army en gineers examined the wreck, but no report was made public. The Grati tude will be salvaged. 1 KILLED; 2 WOUNDED IN RUM-RUNNING BATTLE PACIFIC GROVE, CM., July 38. —Simon Moore, shipyard owner, was shot and killed and two others wounded early today when alleged rum-runners were ambushed by officers at the beach near here, where it is believed plans had been laid for landing a cargo of Canadian whiskey. Moore, accompanying Pacific Grove officers, was shot through the head: Harry Jones, policeman, and a third man, said to have worn a soldier’s uniform, were wounded. The outing will take the form of a huge picnic for the families and friends of employes of the prtntery. More than 3,000 persons are expeet ed to attend.
