GERSHWIN. NOT WAGNER, WOULD BE KING
“Operas are silly,” says Mary Garden, grand opera diva. *Td like
to see them jazzed." “Lohrengrin" looks strange doesn't it when com

brief flapper attire for heavy opera trappings.

Bgalnst him.
In Paris, after his victory over
Carpentier, he visited all the well
known American bars and attempted
to .pay for drinks all around to
strangers, including Americans,
many of whom refused. The French
resented this action on Siki’s part
after he had toppled their idol.
On another occasion, Un Havana,
he leaped put of a hotel window.
When picked up by a passersby,
be smilingly remarked:

Bitten By Lion Cub
Flkl was bitten by a lion cub in
Marseilles, France, just before ho
was to have fought the British
middleweight, Moore. It was thought
that this would prevent Blki from
entering the ring with Moore, but
tt didn't.
In the United States, the “Singu
lar Senegalese” frequently got into
trouble with the police and was
locked up on numerous occasions.
He went “broke” a dozen times,
* only to recoup his fortunes by an
other fight or two. He was well
liked by his friends but generally
regarded as his own worst enemy.
Slkl married Gertrude Amphier,
s Dutch girl, in 1921. He was.the
lather of one child, a boy.
There was some question about
Bikl's marriage to the Holland
tirl. At any rate, Slkl married
again. In July, 1924, he was mar
ried in the Municipal Building,
New York City, to Miss Lillian
Werner, a white woman. His son
ran by his first wife.

THE “CAT AND DOG" LIFE IS ALL TO THE GOOD
At the home of Mrs. C. A. Morrison, of San Francisco, where
“Paddy," wire-haired terrier, and “Fatima," blooded kitten shown
above, play happily together. “Paddy," according to his mistress,
has a “maternal complex’ 'and is especially fond of cats. But the
alley cats get “catty" as soon as he shows up, so “Fatima," young
enough to be helpless, and thoroughbred enough to know what its
all about, was secured, and has grown up with the dog’s compan
ionship.

Brig. Gen. Hugh A. Drum, assist

stand.
Drum explained "who commands
the army.”
“The President. Secretary of War,
chief of staff and chiefs of branches

authority in the order named,” he
said.
Through Drum the prosecution
sought to show that officials of the
air service itself rather than mem

and “modernize” that historic opera.

Senator Robert M. La Follette,

himself as an independent Repub

The assignment of La Follette as

new Republican assignments.
La Follette sent his declaration
of independence' to Senator James

DOESN’T DARE BEMOVB THE COAT

her freedom. Here’s a suggestion, in caw she does jazz things up, for a new “Thais” out

in a photograph. In the opera, of course, tye coat would be very much minus.
