BRITISH TARGET MOVED BY RADIO By International Jieat Service GLASGOW, Nov. 2. —A former giant battleship, a scarred and bat tered ve‘eran, which like a ghost ship, ridjS the waves without a crew, and is steered by unseen hands, is now the target of the British Atlantic Fleet. She was once the Centurion, the pride of the Grand Fleet in time of war, and sistership of the Auda cious which was sunk by a mine. Now, a shattered, dismantled rem nant of her former glory, she car ries within her heavily armored in terior marvelous apparatus which is the most guarded secret of the British admiralty. \ Badly Battered Gunless and turretless, and her fruperstructure smashed to smith ereens, Centurion has already under gone a heavy mauling from the guns of the wardships. Nevertheless, all th* damage has been superfi cial and her remarkable qualities remain unimpaired. ■ She has a crew of about 250 offi cers and men, but when she puts to sea to fulfill her functions as a target her complement is disem- 1 barked and she comess under the control of the destroyer Shikari. The latter vessel, during gunnery exercises, steams about a mile astern, and 2by means of wireless waves determines the movements of ; Centurion. The signals from the destroyer are transmitted by numbered dials like those used for automatic tele phones. These are received by various little aerials scattered about Centurion, which automatically re peat back to show that each signal has been received. All Automatic The Centurion can be made tQ start her engines, to increase .or de crease speed, to stop or go astern, to altar course through any num ber of degrees required, to emit smoke to shield herself when under heavy punishment, and generally behave as though she had all her officers and men aboard. So uncannily does Centurion re , spond to her signals that it is dif ficult to realize that she does not carry a soul, and immense possi bilities are opened up by this amaz ing development in naval science. One member of the crew, how ever refuses to desert the ship un der the heaviest bombardment. This is the ship’s cat, she always carries on. unruffled, amid the tumult of battle, ■Wheio ' MHWOK A glimpse of the drama of cruelty and death that goes on continually underneath the surface of many a smooth, green lawn, says the Path finder, is given by the discoveries of Dr. Degerbol, a Danish naturalist, wno has been studying the food-stor age habits of the common mole. As these animals burrow along just beneath the surface of the ground they encounter many earthworms. I The moles eat most of thepe worms. Undoubtedly it is the demre to ob tain such food that causes the mole to tunnel through the ground. But, according to Dr. E. E. Free, a mole sometimes finds more worms than his appetite will take care of. He then digs a side passage three or four inches' long, leading from the main tunnel. In this convenient "cupboard” he deposits the unwanted worms for use later when hunting Is not so good. The captives are alive, as otherwise their flesh would •poll. However, a whole and active worm thus stored in an earthen-walled cup board would not wait for his captor to come back. The worm would sim ply burrow into the earth and es cape. Th* moles know this perfectly weU, so they resort to the simple ex pdeieht of biting off or crushing the first few segments of the worms, thus rendering the creatures mouth jess and brainless and destroying the sharp, plow-like nose by which they force themselves through the ■oil, The crippled worms may live for days and keep their flesh edible, but they cannot escape.
