Al is pretender to the throne of Hobohemia. Says he was elected king of the hoboes at their national convention. Al dresses like a king, with spats, carefully creased trousers, a sym phony of colors and a cane. He uses only / front doors—in hotels, taxis and restaurants with real cane backs. And he pays only with a smile —so he says Al is staying rent-free at one of the well-known hotels in the Forties. “Sure. Al is our guest,’" said the hotel manager today. "He is a pleasure to have around and he can stay as long as he wants." But Al is leaving for Chicago In a few days. He is traveling de luxe there to raise funds for a lux urious hobo hotel. Then he will go to Montreal to see his girl. He had a "sweetie" in Miami but she’s out of hie mind now. * ‘•Why Work” "Ever work?" Dec. 14 ‘(U.B.).—The most severe blow • ever aimed at American film interests in Europe, is the characterization by American film men of the new movie con tingent decree issued by the Ger man government today. The contingent decree provides that, beginning on July 1. 1929. foreign films to the number of 210 will be permitted to be imported into Germany annually. Os this number, 160 will be allotted to the different nations. Licenses to Import the remaining 60 will be retained by the government, and will be among foreign companies tn prfy portion to the number of German films shown in their own countries. This contingent quota is estab lished for one year, at the end of which the German government re serves the right either to Increase or decrease this figure. Under this decree. American film interests will be compelled either to leave Ger many or operate at even a greater loss than at present, according to representatives of American com panies. Dr. Landwehr, who signed the de cree. categorically denied tonight that the new regulations were se vere. He pointed out: Ntional Daisy Illinois Sheriff Sent To Prison in Rum Plot EAST ST. LOUIS, Hl., Dec. 14 (I.N.S.).—Sheriff Leslie B. Roche, of Alexander county, who pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to violate the prohibition law. was sentenced to a year and a day tn Leavenworth prison and given a 15.000 fine today. Roche was on trial here with 54 other defendants from Alexander county.
