18 EX-CHANCELLOR SUCCUMBS BERLIN, March 21 (1.N.5.). The German Socialist Party was leaderless today with the death of former Chancellor Hermann Mueller, who passed away last night after a long illness. He was operated on a week ago. rallying temporarily. Pneumonia that developed was complicated by heart weakness. He was 54 year old. Headed Cabinet Twice Herr Mueller, the "man of iron nerve,” headed the cabinet twice and as chancellor enjoyed the distinction of holding office longer than any other. During his stewardship, he placed the repar ations question on a definite basis through the Young Plan and re leased the Rhineland from for eign occupation. In lune, 1919, Dr. Mueller ac cepted the bitter task of signing the Versailles treaty. In the face of scorching criticism from his party, he maintained that there by he only saved the fatherland from q, far worse fate. At Ver sailles, die accepted the document handed to him by Clemenceau, of France, and signed it without comment or reading of the text. His death came at a time when the powerful socialist party, in ■which he wielded great influence, faced a desperate struggle to pre serve its parliamentary pretige. Its party discipline is under | severe strain, with the socialists compelled to pursue policies evi- j dently unpopular with the pub-' lie.
