After an Irregular opening, in which gains and losses were well sprinkled over the active list, in dustrial stocks turned upward and by noon had recovered a good part of yesterday’s losses. ' Instead of tax selling today the Industrials had the benefit of short covering by the profes sionals and outsiders who have .. been persistently on the short side of the market since early Novem ber. ' Utilities Gain Recovery also extended to the utility stocks. United Gas Im provement moved up about a point to 17‘ z a, while Consolidated Gas rose fractionally to 59. "Big Steel’’ at 37% showed a rise of nearly 2 points from Mon day’s low. American Tel <fc Tel gathered in more than a point at. 114 and. Auburn Auto rose 4 points to IM%. '» Westinghouse made a better showing in its recover? to 23%. and General Motors was up a point from yesterday’s low. Commodities Quiet Call money renewed at 3 per cent, with prospects of a stiffen ing in rates by the end of the week. Commodity markets were quiet. A further drop of 150 points in the Japanese yen to 36.50 fea tured the foreign exchange mar ket. The Curb Market Just about struck dead center in slightly more active trading today, with few of the recognized speculative leaders able to show any decided price drift in the course of the session. Selected utility favorites were able to improve their position to a limited extent. American Gas and Electric was a strong spot, rallying from its early low at 34% to 36 for a net gain of a point. Oils continued to hover around their all-time lows for the bear market. Humble penetrated its former bottom with a fractional sell-off to 44%. Among the specialty issues to perform in better than average manner wert Aluminum which reached 52 for a gain of 1% points. / Investment trusts churned around in Irregular fashicta. Hydro Electric securities was in fair demand, wit*, a gain of % at 6%. Curb bonds were irregular, with Electric Power and Light 5s dip ping 1% points to 54. In the last week of De cember, 1930, an average rate of 35 per cent was maintained. Virtually all district companies will resume production on levels in effect before the holidays and in several departments gains will be recorded. There were considerable price fixing orders in evidence, while Japanese Interests were good buy ers of July. I Wall Street bought distant months. On the selling side of the market were offerings of July by Liverpool and the Con tinent. The New York Cotton Ex change service estimated world consumption of American cotton in November at 996,000 bales as against 1,017,000 bales in October and 929,000 in November.
