Radio Gossip And Studio -Chatter By STANLEY BIGELOW The ancient clock that for many years intoned the advent of a new year for George Wash ington, will send its melodious chimes over an N.BC. network New Year Day The striking of the historic timepiece at noon Friday will inaugurate the national bicen tennlal celebration of the Father of His Country s birth. Gover nor Pollard oft Virginia will pre side at • the ceremonies, which will be held in the Mary Wash ington House, on the Washing ton Kenrfiore estate. Kate Objects The other dav we printed Wai ter Damrosch's comment on the need for better music. Now along comes Kate Smith, whose *<»>**«« eagle eye seems to read every thing the newspapers print about radio, and objects to Mr. Dam rosch’s remarks. Says Kate: “Far be it from me to at tempt to' match my knowledge of music with that of Walter Damrosch, but I have ideas on the subject. I think he under estimates the value of popular music. I believe there is pleas ure in the popular song for more people than m the classi cal number —and what are we on earth for? Enjoyment, that's all. The vogue of classical music will always be with us, but so will be that of the popular ditty. Let’s havfr both, in moderation.” What do the readers think? Why Not? If the editor had any influence with the program managers— which he has not!-—he would make the following suggestions for 1932: More of Julia Sanderson’s giggle. Rubinoff on the air every night. A more evenly apportioned ballyhoo for radio entertainers. More good comedy of the original sort. • /" * ' Juuia Fewer torch singers and darn few sopranos. More novel broadcasts, based on the day’s news, originating outside the studios. ' Less advertising hokum and no contests/in commercial programs Enough male crooners to supply one for each love-sick maiden who adores the stock we have on hand now. Dots and Dashes “Successes oi 1931’ will be staged by the Northern Dramatic Company over WOL Thursday at B:3o...Peter Dixon’s “Raising Junior” is among the few N. B. C. programs without music...
