6 ALL CATALONIA IN GRIP Os RED TERROR (“Terror comparable to the French and Russian revolutions'* grips Catalonia, writes Lee Dick son, International News Service staff correspondent, in the first of four articles of conditions in this war-torn group of provinces, which many observers believe will be the site of the next So viet state. Dickson wrote his articles after returning to Paris from a tour of Catalonia.) By LEE DICKSON (Copyright. I>3S. by International N«w« Service) PARIS, Dec. 2.—Anarchy and Communism hold all Catalonia, and particularly Barcelona, its capital and city of over a million, i in a grip of terror comparable only to that of the French and Russian revolutions. Few of the facts of present day, nerve-wracked Catalonia are so far known abroad. And this is due to two reasons. First, a general misunderstand ing of the term “popular front’’ government as it applies to Bar celona, and Second, the strictest censorship the world has ever known. Reds Tighten Grip After the befuddled army gar rison of Barcelona had come into the streets on July 19 and been slaughtered in its abortive at tempt to subjugate the city, the extreme radical element of work ers and laborers took things into their own hands, and have tight ened their grip day by day. The terroristic regime of con fiscation, wholesale executions, suppressions of private rights and property follows as closely as pos sible that employed in Petrograd in November, 1917. The Cata lonian reds are worshippers of their Russian torchbearers. The Hotel colon, once the finest in Barcelona, is now Communist headquarters. Its facade is dec orated with huge pictures of Len in and Stalin, a red canvas streamer stretched between them. The Hotel Ritz Is “gastronom ical Center No. 1” — meaning a soup kitchen where thousands are fed daily. Minor hotels have been permitted to remain open under control of Soviet committees. Bank Accounts Seized All bank accounts were seized by the government. In addition, all public services were sovietized, so that trains, trams and busses are painted red and black and bear identifying symbols. Each carries the inscriptions O. N. T. and F. A. I.—Workers’ National Confederation and Iber ian Anarchists’ Federation, re spectively—which are all-powerful and merely tolerate the milder U. G. T. (Workers General Union) and the left republicans, headed by President Luis Companys. There also are many other red groups and syndicates, for women, for youth movements and so forth, but the C. N. T. and F. A. I. con trol Catalonia and its formidable preparations for defense against the Fascists. Third in importance is P. O. U. M.—the Trotsky group of Soviets or power of the Marx ist Workers Union. Autos Confiscated Private cars were of course con fiscated. Their owners were in some cases executed, sometimes imprisoned or perhaps tolerated pending eventualities—a sinister position, with all avenues of es cape cut off. These cars, too, have been smeared with identifying initials and Sovietized for “ govern ment” service. v No one attempted to refuse sur render of his belongings to armed *> “visitors” from the C. N. T. or ’■ F. A. I.—those who were the under '■ dogs of monarchist regime, who ' felt themselves hopelessly op pressed by the privileged grandees, the army and the church, and are now launching their own experi ment, beginning with terrorism. This fast piece of work was re called today by Christian Herold, of 326 A St. S. E., who for the past 14 years has been retired from the Yard. Mr. Herold, now 72, learned his trade as a machinist in a private firm in Washington, starting in 1881, and entered the Navy Yard in 1900, where he worked in the bridge mechanism shop, part of the time working as a leading man in that shop. He recalled that when the guns were fitted up for the Maine the work went on continuously every day including Sundays. Since his retirement he has been operating an elevator in a building in the 900 block of E Street Northwest, although several times, he said, he has been offered a place at the Yard again. He explained, however, that if he returned at the age of around 60, one could not be sure how perma nent the employment would be, while with the job he has now, plus his retirement pay, he was more or less certain of what his INSULL 'GEM' FIGHT STILL ON CHICAGO, Dec. 3 (1.N.5.). The bickering over Samuel In sult's shirt studs and cuff links continued today. It was reported, however, that the deposed utilities czar and Mme. Helene Coyimzoglu, his hostess during his exile in Greece in 1933 and 1934, were near a settlement of her claim for the jeweled doo-dads. Her attorney said: “There is only a difference of about $2,000 in the amount we ask and the proposition they have made.” The attractive, brown-eyed Athe nian matron threatened to sue the aged Insull for $60,000, declaring Insull had told her the jeweled trinkets were worth $40,000, and demanding in addition immediate payment of $20,000 she said Insull had bequeathed her in a will exe cuted in Athens while she was helping him hide from Federal process servers. Mme. Coyimzoglu returned to New York last night, but declared she will be in Chicago Saturday, if necessary, to start court proceed ings. The amount offered Mme. Coy imzoglu in settlement was not made known, but it was learned the Insulls at one time during the series of conferences offered her $4,500 and said they couldn’t scrape up any more. Insull has said he would gladly turn the baubles over to Mme. Coyimzoglu, but they are in a safe deposit box in Paris, and he can’t afford a trip to Paris to get them.
