VIRGINIA FREE PRESS. Charlestown, Jefferson County. Office is “Jeffehsos Bi ilkiso." Saturday, December 24,1870 County-Seat Again. In advocating, as we have, the removal of the County Seat to Charlestown, of course noth ing could be further from our purpw than t" eeek controversy with any one. Indeed wv were so confident that the movement was *> manifestly just and proper that we hardly sup posed there was room f >r controcersy at all.— Henc# we cb aracteriaed it a* a “ simple act o' justice to the people of the county.' Our friend. the Shephenlst<>wn /twister, however, takes exceptions to this umde of dealing with the subject, and says “ why our Cotemporarv imagines this would be an act of *• simple jus tice ” to the people at large, we cannot divine. ’ In an article published ince this protest was written, we endeavored to show why “simple ’ustice ” would be subserved by the proposed restoration, and laiil before onr readers, and we trust manv of the reader* of the Register, the facts and statistics upon which that judgment is predicated. Jo that article we now refer onr friend and ask hi* careful and thoughtful perusal *-f it.— Iti it we think is demonstrated the fact drawn j from the results of the last C«'su* that the coti vei ience of at least two to one of th* people oi the county requires the county-seat to be «> ( nsrlestown rather than Shephenlstowu >r an\ ,lUr n,n>sl We insist IllXkll it til .It the geography of the county *npp -rts bey«uid &.1 question this view of the case. Let us take tl e* CoiiDty-sraU in the order in whn h the\ are uaroed and see if that is not the ca-e p'irst then, is Berryville. U here else could the people >f the county hive gone fun ; eonnty-aeat? A location elsewhere w ul.l hav. , changed the whole r a 1 system of the county A pouitnm nearer the geographical centre might have l-een found but what was there t attract them to the »p -t? There would hav. ■ bceu neither a towu nor nadsto invite them • to it. The next i» Fr >nt P. yal. a town also older J than Warren county whose County-sent it is and if our friend will examine any relial»l«* map of Virginia he will discover that it i» not very far from the centre of the county. The reason* which led t > i»s selec tion aside fr>>ni its cen trality were the same as in the case *f Berry ville.
