The defeat of the Army of the Loire, uuder Geuer&l Chauzy, seems to have been complete, though a despatch from Bordeaux says that be retreated in goo 1 order. The battle-field before Lu Mans was a valley, which was cover ed with twelve inches of «uo\Y> and the two armies had occupied heights opposite each other. The Germans are spoken of as having been cool and collected, the French bravo and i impetuous. The carnage is described as hav iug been fearful, the dead and wounded strew ing the ground and the fields red with blood. Fifteen thousand Frenchmen had fallen before o o'clock. It was expected that another battle would be fought by General Chauzy. The siege of Paris is vigorously pressed and the b-inbardmeiit is continued with increased j el feet, the shells falling inside the city without i intermission. The French have made “ frantic ; attenipts” to turn the batteries with attacks of infantry, using the bayonet freely, but have | been invariably repulsed by the Germans, after iidlicting but little h-ss. Two sorties were made, one under the personal superintendence ot Tr.whu, which are described a* haviug been vig. runs *md fierce, but they were driven back, iu one case almost to the glacis of the fort. The French forces operating for the defence of Havre were attacked by the Prussians at Buurut'ville on Friday and were compelled to retire. They are said to have fought well.— The f it died town of Pcrouue has been cap tured by the Germans. The capture is con sidered important, as it secures a line of ad-I \ ance for their reinforcements. Favorable rep rts have been received at Bordeaux from General B airbaki. He says that the French have carried the villages of Arn valid St. Marie, have reoccupied Gray, Lure and Vo. ul, ami were gaining ground. The jiarticu.ars of the great battle before I.e Mans leave no doubt of iho complete defeat of the French. It is remarked that the disas ter was most unlooked for, ami that, if the Sec mi Army of the Loire is lost, all hope for France is gone. A correspondent, writing from Versailles, spvasuigor tne uomoarument, says uiat it was absolutely unceasing for twelve hours. The (.louche bridge, near IJasmetidon, was struck by si.ells while crowded with men, broken down and ita occupants precipitated an im mense height, crushing them to death. According to a despatch from Loudon, Gen. Chauzy still holds stroug poaitious, has reor ganized his army, and will resume operations. The same accouut states that the external bat teries of Paris were indicting great damage upon the Prussian forts, and had forced them to slacken their fire, and that the L’astern forts had ennuouadod tiie whole Prusiau liue, ou that side, with much effect. Faidherbo is re ported lr tu Lille as daily receiving reinforce ments. and to Le advancing, lieports from Paris describe the rain of projectiles ponriug into a portion of the city as being uuparalled in he history of sieges, and that it continues without interruption day and night. Hos pitals, ambulances, schools, public libraries, i Lurches and many private houses have been struck. Women, children and infants In their mothers’ arms, have been killed. Paris has been turned into a battlefield and the bravery of the women is equal to that of the men. As the details of the disaster to the French army of the Loire at Le Mans accumulate the fact presents itself that the larger portion of • Lau/.y’s army, estimated at W,n*)0 men, has beeu forced to retreat towards Laval, about forty n. !cs west of Le Mans, while a smaller p rtion, estimated at some 3<>,000, retreated to wards Alencou, about the same distance north 01 Le Mans. It is uot yet known whether the two sections are able to communicate, but it is certain that they arc making every effort to rally f< r another tight, in which there seems no h> >pc of success, now that they have been de feated in one of the*r grandest and most hope1 fill and extraordinary movements. General Chauzy attributes his bad luck to ail inexplicable panic among some of his troops before I e Mans, but • omits upou t» •• mi promo effort ’’ yet to be made to save the country. The bombardment of Paris continues with murderous c< nsequences, and the hope of the people seems to exist in the chances of relief to be afforded bv the forts on the eastern side. Thousands of persons u*e congregating on that side of the city, and many find shelter in the wood of Vincennes. At. ther serious battle occurred on the Iftli m ar IV f rt. in the Vosges, lasting nine hours', in which the French were finally repulsed by Gen. Werder. The French Army of the North are again in nr tint) and advances towards the Somme.— The bridges over the river in his front have been burned by tiie Germans. The French have been heavily reinforced, and great results are expected of the advance. Thursdays A\tcs. German projectiles directed towards that quarter i — nth of Paris' reach the Port St. Michael. The fire of tho French is said to be improving in effectiveness, especially' on the west side. Gen. (.’liauzy^continnes his retreat. Gen.
