May 13,1870 tL_ s UMA C J! I WILL BUY any amount of Sntnac that is pro perly gathered and cured, and pay CASH FOB IT! according to quality, as follows—delivcred at my Sumac and Bark Mills, Winchester. Directions :•—The Sumac should be taken trhile the top it it ill in the leaf—tny ns a general thing, during July, August and September, and not af ter it has thrned much Red. anil in no case after it has begun to dry up and deaden nor after the least frost. The Red Berries should all he thrown out. The He or Black Sumac, as it is called, is ns good as anv. It may be wilted in tbc sun. but must be cured under cover, and not allowed to be burnt by the sun or to get »ref, or to bo in such large qnantics as to hn>t in curing—any of which destroys its color and itrength and renders it raluelen. It should not be thrown upon a tight floor to cure, bnt raised up, so as to let the air get under it; and bv shelving loosely, much surface can be ob tained in a small space, and the Sumac will cure faster. All Sumac should he gathered at least a month before it is sufficiently cured to be brought in for sale, and in dry weather even a longer time may be required to properly dry it; fo- not only the leaf, but tho stem, too, must be thoroughly drv ; all the tap must he dried out, so that it will snap abort off, like a clay pipe stem, or it cannot be received, for it will heat and spoil—lAi* must be itrictly obaerred. However long Sumac mav have been taken or however dry it may be, it will draw the dampness from the atmosphere in a damp time, and »»»•/ not be packed until it is per/ectly dried out again.— We cannot receive Sumac when damp any more than when it is green. I r M' sr Bf liar. Sumac should have the same <jreen, bright color and freak appearanre when enred as when taken from tbc bush, and tnu4not be bleached, nor look dark and dead, nor imell minty. It is just as im portant to have yonr Sumac gathered at the pro per time and in "good condition w hen brought to market as anything else. If »«nd or dirt of any kind, or any" other kind of leaves, are found aill 'll" It, II W III IM'l is I, HWJ *» » 'll , and by mixing bad with good you spoil all. The leaf is what is wanted, hut to facilitate the gathering of it you can strip off the blades—that is, take the Utile taint upon which the leaves grow, all of w iiich will be bought when properly cured, according to the above directions, and ONE DOLLAR AM) TWENTY-FIVE CENTS per one hundred pounds will be paid for it in this condition. We prefer Sumac stripped oil'or blad ed as above, hut will buy threshed Sumac and pav for it accordingly a* it is cleaned; provided, it fins the greater part of the stem taken out and is not made so line as to prevent the separation of what steins remains, and so entirely destroy the formation of the leaf, as to prevent the detection of adulteration. So do not cut it up, or make it too tine in any way. The stripping oil the I axes is apt to kill the Su mac, and when the stalk dies the roots connected w ith it die also ; but if you w ill cut the old stalk down, or breakup the ground so as to cut and separate the roots, the Sumac w ill sprout up again better than ever. When your Sumac Unit ready fur delivery, BAGS will be furnished f<>r bringing it in: but they must be Kell fitted and jtrnnijitly returned Kith rare. Apply for Bags to the stores, or Factory on Braddock street, above the Run. I Will Also ISii> mark Oak Itark That is properly taken and cured, and pav CASH for Hat the rate of SIN DOLLARS 1'Kit CORD delivered at mv SUMAC AND BARK MILLS, WINCHESTER. VA.. B1KECTIONS.—Commence peeling the bark as soon as the sap starts in the spring, and in tak ing it peel as much of the tree as possible—even the largo limbs—fur the voung, tender bark is the best. After it is peeled it must be piled np loosely, so as a; allow the air to pass freely through it, and per fectly drv it. The outer or rough side must at any e be kept up, in order to protect the inner or fleshy side from the weather—which being the part used, must be kept bright and not allowed to mould or get wet, which injures its color.
