TIIE LAST SUPPER.
“Anil when they had sung a bvmn they went out
into the Mount of Olives.
What song safig the twelve with the fin^loT
When finished the Sacrament nine?
Were thev bowed and subdued in behavior,
Or bold as made bold with a sign ?
Were the hairy boasts strong and defiant.’
Were the naked arms brawny and strong?
Were the bearded lips lifted reliant,
Thrust forth aud full sturdy xx ith song ?
What sang they? What sweet song <>f Zion,
With Christ In their midst like a crown
While here sat Saint Peter, the lion;
Aud there, like a lamb, with head doxvy,
Sat Saint John, with his silken and rfiveu
Rich hair on his shoulders, and eyes
Lifting unto the faces unshaven
Like a sensitive child in surprise.
Was the song as strong fishermen swinging
Their nets full of hope to the sea ?
Or low, like the ripple wave, singing
Sea-songs on their loved Galilee?
Were they sad with foreshadow* of sorrows,
Like the birds that sine low when the breeze
Is tip toe with a tale of to morrow*—
Of earthquakes and sinking of teas-?
Ah ! soft was their song as the wax s are
That fall in loxv musical moans;
And fail 1 should say as the winds are
That bloxv by the white gravestone*.
ALL THE BIRDS SIMi IN Tl NIL
All the birds they sing in tune,
0 lu art, keep beating time
For the world is full of Juuc,
Aud life is in its prime.
All the clouds float soft aud white
In a skv serenely blue ;
Peace and Hope sit left wd right
Those friends are tried and tiue.
Ring loud, O ioybell, sweet and clear,
i hem t, no longer roam :
The best of life is noxv and here
lu the atmosphere ot home.

Fecundity of Fishcc.
The Siiailific America.i says : it is said that
probably abrnt i><l,(i00,000 or 70,000,000 cod
fi.,h are lakeu fr->m the si i annually around
the sh<>rc.- of Newfoundland. Hut even that
quantity seems sindl when v.a consider that
; the ci d yields something like 3,500,000 eggs
| each season, and that even 8,000,000 have been
1 f..mid in the roc of a single cod. • Hher fi-h,
though not equaling the c>>d, arc wonderfully
productive. A herring, six or seven ounces in
weight, i provided with about 30,000 "va.—
After making all reasonable allowances fur the
destruction of <ggs and of the young, it his
been calculat 1 that ii. t! r? • years a. ingle pair
ofberring would produce 154,000,000. Hulfon
sai l, that if a pair of Herrings were left to
breed and multiply undisturbed for a period ..I
twenty y ears, they would yield a fish bulk
equal to the gh.be on which we live. The Cod
far surpasses the herring in fecundity. Were
it not that va-t numbers of the eggs were de
stroyed, fish would so multiply as to lill the
waters completely.
Training a Ileifer.
i >ws usually become addicted to kicking
when heifers from being milked by abusive
milkers. I havo never seen an old cow he-|
Colitc a kicker unless nhii> d. Instead of cows
being avcise to being milked when giving a
large quantity, I have ever found it the reverse.
When pasturage is g . .1, and cows come home
at night with milk, our ‘'down Mist” cows
seem grateful to have :t removed. Milking a
heifer fur fb .,r.-t tdr.c requires natience. f >r
they trill almost invariably kick.- In such a
case put a broad strap round her 1 dy, ju>t
front of the udder and buckle it up moderately
tight, and so soon r.s she g» t> quiet ,for she
will dance around a littlo at first ', take your
pail, r it down and g i to milking, for she is
as helpless as a kitten. Do not attempt t"
use a rope instead of a . t;«.p, f<*r it will not an
swer. This iS a much better method than
tying the leg*, as it docs not hurt the animal
in the !ea;t. A few applications of tiie strap,
with plenty of patience and kindness, will
cure the most obstinate ease.—Jitiral Ilona:.
Female Loveliness.
Do you think von can make a girl lovely if
you do not make her happy. There is not one
restraint you put on a good girls’s nature—
tln-rc is not one check you give to her instincts
of affection or <>f effort—which is all lire mot;
paiuf il because it takes away tie Liiglituv. s
from the eyes of innocence, and charm from
tjicbrowof virtue. The perfect lovliness of a
witra.ui’s countenance can only consist in the
majestic peace which » found in the memory

I had never seen liiui before. He brotijht
letters of introduction from mutual friends in
San Francisco, anil by invitation I breakfasted
with him. It was almost religion, there kt the
silver mines, to precede suoh a meal with wh.s
ky cocktails. Artcmus, with the true cosmo
politan instinct, always deferred to the cu-toms
ajf the country he was in, and so he ordered
three of those abominations. ITingstou was
prescut. I am a match for nearly any bever
age you can mention except whisky cocktail,
and therefore I said 1 would rather not drink
one. I said it would go right to my head and
coufusc me so that I would lo in a helpless
U:.gle in ten minutes. I did not want to act
like a lunatic before -strangers, but Artcmus
gently insisted, end 1 drank the treasonable
mixture under protest* and felt ah the time
that 1 was doing a thing that might he sorry
for. In a minute or two I h'egau to imagine
that my ideas were clouded. I waited in great
anxiety for the conversation to open, with a
sort of vague hope that my understanding
would prove clear, after all, and my misgiv
ings prove groundless.
Artcmus dropped an unimportant remark or
two, and then assumed a look of superhuman
cam:, tncss and made the following astound*
ing speech, lie said :
"Now, there is one thing I ought to ask you
about before I forget it. You have been hero
at ijilverland—here in Nevada—two or three
years, and, of course, your position on the dai
ly press has made it necessary f »r you to go
down in the mines and examine them careful
ly in detail, and therefore you know all about
the silver mining business. Now, what I want
to get at is—is, well the way deposits of ore
are iinuso, you Know, i or ;n: wnc. .*<u»,
1 understand it, the veiu which contains the
silver is sandwiched in between castings of
granite, and runs along the ground, and sticks
up like a curlstoue.
Well, take a veiu forty feet tl.iclt, for exam
ple, or eighty, fur that mattt r, or even a hun
dred—say you go down on it with a abaft,
straight down, you know, or with what you
call the ‘inclines,’ maybe you go down five
hundred feet, or maybe you don’t g > down but
two hundred feet, any way you go d iwn, and
all the time lids vein grows narrower, when tin
castings come nearer or approach each other,
you may say, that is when they do approach,
which of course they do n t always do, | artic
ularly in eases where* the nature ol the (urina
tion is such that they stand apart wider than
they otherwise would, and which geology has
failed to account for, although everything in
that science goes to prove that, all thing* be
ing equal, it would if it did not, or would not!
certainly If it did, aud theu of course they are.
Do uot you think il is .' ’
I said to myself: ‘ Now, T ju*t knew h nv it
would be—that cusced whi.-ky cocktail has
done the business forme ; 1 don’t understand
any more than a clam. And then I said
aloud, “I—I—that is—if you don't mind,
would you—would you say that over again ?
I ought-"
“(>, certainly, certainly ! \ ou see i am v. -
ry unfamiliar with the subject, and perhaps I
don't present my case clearly, but 1-”
“ No. no—no, no—you state in plain enough,
hut that vile cocktail has muddled me a little.
Ilut I will—no, 1 do understand, for that
matter; but I Wuiild get the hang of it all the
better if you went over it again—and I'll pay
better attention this time.”
lie said: “Why, what I was after, was
this.” [ Here he became even more fearfully
impressive than ever, aud emphasized each par
ticular point by checking it off on Ids linger
ends.] “ This vein, or lode, or ledge, or w hat
ever you call it, runs along between twy layers
of granite, just the same as if it were a sand
wich. Very well. Now, suppose you go
down on that, say a thousand feet, or maybe
twelve hundre 1, it don't really matter,) l>cfore
you drift; and then you start your drifts, some
of them across the ledge, nod others along the
length of it, where the sulpb.urcts—I believe
they call them sulphurcts, though why they

the very idea of such a thing, even though it
were palpably demonstrated as such. Am 1
not right?”
I said sorrowfully ; “ I feel ashamed of my
self, Mr. Ward, I know I ought to under
stand you perfectly well, Lut you soo that in
fernal whisky cocktail has got into my head,
and now I cannot understand even the simplest
proposition. I told you how it would he/'
“0, don't mind it, d n't mind it the fault

dear, enough for-”
"Don’t say a word. Clear! Why, you
stated it as clear as the sun to anybody but an
abject idiot, but it’s that confounded cocktail
that has played the mischief/'
“ No, now don’t say that, i’ll Legiu all
ever again, and—•—
"Don’t r.ovv—for goodness’ sake don’t do
anything of the kind, because 1 tell you my
head is in snch a condition that I don’t believe

” Now, don’t you ho afraid. I’ll put it so
plain this time that you can’t help but get the
haug of it. We will begin at the very begin
ning.” [Leaning far across the table, with
determined impressiveness wrought upon hi.-,
every feature, and fingers prepared to keep
tally of each point aseuumcrated ; and 1, lean
ing forward with painful interest, resolved to 1
comprehend or perish.] “ You know the vein,

whereby it coiiotitutca the medium between all

I heard a suspicious. n>>isc behind me, ami
turned in time to see liiugst<>n dodging h hind
a newspaper, and quaking with a gentle ecsta
sy of laughter. I looked at Ward again, and
he had thrown off his dread solemnity and was
laughing also. Then I saw that I had b. u

swindle io the way of a string of plausildy
