TaAVEBs delivered an elo quent and highly finished address at “Charles Washington Hall,” on Monday n;g!it, to a crowded audience. After music by two Hands I and a fell, t an introduction by Mr. A. \Y. Hawks, Mr.. Tkavkusremarked, in substance, ! that the subject upon which he would address his audience is ‘'Sr.!.K-lin.i'." In its st-lec iicn he had been chiefly influenced by the fact that ho should iu all probability appear before a number of young men whose success in life will depend more upon their owu exertions than upon any aid they may receive from others. “ The tru st v. is 1 m is a resolute determi nation ’* was one of the maxims of the great Napoleon. To a faithful observance of it did he owe nu re than to all tilings el.-e that won derful ai.'l dazzling career in which Kings aud Mmperors were mere puppets, and Kingdoms , ami Umpires mere playthings in his bands.— There is n . occupati >u however humble, no la bor however unimportant, no seat in the world’s go it workshop however low, where the qualities which belonged to one of the most illustrious 'coders of men would not cause that occupation to be better followed, that labor to become more effective, that seat more exalted. Th: earth belongs to the persistent —to the men who, conscious of their owu ca j parities, resolutely employ them iu the fore ( front of Life’s battles. T’iie development of these forces is dependent upon the exercise of the individual will. In such a work each man is bis own best workman. Hence everywhere the truth is ownt 1 aud confessed that every mau is the chief artificer of his ow n destiny— preeminently so iu a country like ours. Here, more than anywhere else, is recognized the fact that the essential difference between n:a< aud man is knowledge. To be couteut witb I life’s lab. r, mau must b~ iu harmony with it ; lUiiiu, ua.'iu auu .tuunvu iuuci w mvvvim. The first, most vital inquiries which man must answer t r hiuise'f are: What am I best adapt ed to do Iu which direction or natural en ; dow men's do I most surely tend V These an swered, let each address himself to the perform • ance of the {'art selected, nut by Looks aloue ; a man perfects himself by work much more than by reading. They are u growing kiud of mau that can wisely combine the two things, it will i t be hng before every young man will discover that there is no occupation to which he may not devote himself iu whose prose, ut: n lie will not be convinced of tne value i f discipline, or of the vast superiority of the educated over the uneducated uiiud.— Through ut the universe the dominion of law exists. It must be understood, tor ull tilings obey it and are governed by it. it is encoun tered in wood, in stone, in steel, in iron, iu earth, airuud sea, ruling their relations to each other, and mau s relations to them. It is :n agriculture, iu manufactures, iu commerce, in trade, in business ul every sort and description. But these advantages of discipline and train 1 iog, said Mr Travers, should m>t be regarded as i ric imucndatioa to an eutire devotion to the gr, >s utilitarianism which it is the fashion of the hour to inculcate as the highest good within human reach. The system of educa t on whicu reduces everything to a gold stan dard, tiCteruiines the value of mental action by the money p .w r it is supposed to ooufer, is based i n a low conception of man’s nature or destiny lie said he would impress it up»n the yi’Ui.g a.cn before him that, in the midst of useful pursuits, there are other and higher and purer tilings than these calling loudly for a diligent exercise of the ooble faculties with which they have been endowed. Iu conclusion, in deprecating a vicious prac tice which he believed is blasting the faiiest ' prospects aud blighting the brightes1 hopes of the young men of this land, Mr. Travers trust ed he would n <t he misunderstood. That it is ■ an evil all must acknowledge, and as such we cannot cl our eyes to the ditify fruits of sor row which it yields. It saps the very founda tions of vigorous manly character, destroys : the constitution, converting that beautiful ' piece of mechanism, the human frame, into a j jarring, discordant organism,— its springs of J action weakened or broken, its once elastic st-p l.ingurJ and tottering, its form bent and swaying iu the storm, *'hc eye ray less, the check, once suffused with the ruddy hue of health, sicklied o’er with the pale caste of liei>;iuentry. *vj wonuer me ucaiwu, uu trayciI, disgraced and yet ropebtaut Cassio should exclaim : "To be nun- a sensible man, by and bt a fool, and presently ibtaA'.
