Prince Ili-mark is credited with the story that wlien the well-known African traveler. Dr. Robert Felkin, was stay ng with the blood thirsty King M'esa. of Ugada, many years ago, the King, out of gratitude for lii visitor’s medical treatment, wished to cut off bis head. On Dr. Felkin representing that the treatment was i it finished, and that if interrupted it would cause Mtesa’s death, the latter granted him a reprieve un til he was quite recovered. Then, however, nothing availed, and tiio execution was de termined upon. Emin Pacha, who was a friend of Dr Felkin, had instructed him most accurately about the state of affairs in Ugada and the court of King Mtesa, and ii id revealed to him an important .State so cret—namely, where Mtctms powder store was hidden. Dr. Felkiti remembered this at the right moment, and as a last resort threatened that it Mte-si kill* d him he would bring down a flash of lightning upon his powder store. .Mtesa replied incredulously, “Tell me where it is;" whereupon Dr Fel icia whispered in his ear, ‘‘It is concealed under your harem.” Mtesa turned pale, md allowed Fe.kin and his companions to live. The “lightning maker’s” authority increased when next day a flash of light ning happened to -trike near the harem. Here is the latest puzzle, says an ex change: I see a monkey in a tree. 1 start to go ar u:id him and he keeps going around as I do, keeping the trunk of the tree be tween him and me. I reached the place 1 started from, with the monkey still opposite me in the tr e. Now, having been around the tree, have I also been arouu I the mon ic-y? A Boston woman is quoted as saying : "i tried it on my husband 1 had him foi th- monkey, and I took i whrfkbrooin and went around him, brusiiLig his clothes — He kept turning around ju-T ns I did, anti when I finished 1 had brushed nly one side of him an 1 one leg of his p intaioons. Now all th * pro:,-*->rs Harvard University couldn’t convince me tIi it. I had bevr around that in in, neither ha I the man beei around tlie monkey in the tree. What do you think Professor Charles A. Y mug. the eminen Print- »ton astron mn»r. recently sat cbattiiq in the court of the Palace. One of his Ii tener.s could not refrain from asking him i an a If-hand way : “What is to y u toe most wonderful am startling fact in astronomy ? “The lact that your great Lick le!e*oop< reveals about 100,OOt),CKK» of stars, ami ilia everv one ol them i- i sun, theoretically am by analogy giving iigl.t and heat to Iii8 plan ets. Where a $10 000 Chef Prepares the Food in Silver-Lined Utensils. W. K. Vanderbilt's chef lias had such renown that the temple in which he moves and the altar at which he officiate? must be of interest. Both are worth his ! cost to import and worthy his talents Mr. Vanderbilt’s kitchen is really vtr\ i beautiful to the eye. The purity of mar ble, the lu-ler of tiles ami the ghuni ot metal are what one sees. The floor i- ol j marble, tbc shelves, the tables, the sink-, all the things that are rarely moved are of marble and cut with the precision ol jewels. The walls are lined with cream enameled tile.- and all the angles are cov ered with brass mouldings. Where these meet the doors and windows they ara> uv ! ered with these metal molt.dings, dispens ing even with wooden trim. Hie cciljng is made of white enameled tile- set in ce* [ ment. But one docs not imperil the head j of a §10,000 cook with a loosely-set brick, | so each tile is also secured with raised j metal Iwdts. Accenting all this gleam ol while and ! metal is the large double range. It seisin one corner underji large semi circular hood i enriched with endm-ed Copper ornaments, and swung from iron bars wrought in I spiral and foliations. I his hood is so • powerful an agent in carrying off the <* * d» r a n! greasy sham that it will waft from the hand a newspaper hold under it. The cooking utensils are in keeping j with all this splendor. They are of cop ; per, with wrought iron handles, many ol \ tli in ornamented, and some of them have j been copied from special pieces in the i ( luny and other museums, luxurious cooking utensils are indeed the things <»1 the moment, and a wedding present not disdained is a set of eopjxT silver-lined, such ns are displayed among gems and gold at thejew-lers. Leading from the kitchen to the butler’s pantry arc spiral stairs entirely enclosed in glass to shut out possible odor, yet retain the light. And this is so successfully done that, al though the kitchen is directly below the ' dining-room and the Imller s pantry, noth* ' iug disa reeable makes its way aloft. Before referring to another attachment of this ki'. lien allusion should he made to the drains and hose outlet in the centre of the marble floor, for it is by a bos* which may play fearlessly in any part of the room, that the kitchen is kept clean. I Connected with the kitchen, and built ! under the sidewalk, is a series of vaults. | These are for ice, meat, vegetables, milk and egg.-, aud arc built in three sections of hollow masonry, that th<*y may he kepi tree from damp and have perfect ventila ion. Itev. T. I)e Witt Talmnge is fond of any story that will illustrate a sermon or beautifv a moral. Here is one that he tells now aud then in bis own original way: A German family emigrated from the fatherland o this country and settled in m:i.. . Then he w rote his la ther this kind of an appeal: * J)ear Father—I am sick and lonely, without one single cent. Send me some money quick. Your son, John'.’ Now the father was illiterate and could not read, so lie weift to a great strapping butcher and asked him to read the letter. The butcher had a grufF way of reading and a loud voice. \N lien he fini>hed reading John’s letter the father was furious and declared he would not send a p< nuy, even if the boy starved to death. He had never heard of such an impudent demand for money. Un his way home the father thought the butcher might have made a mistake iu reading, and a desire to hear the letter read again overcame him. A ednsump • live baker, with a low, falling inflection, was next n-k^-d to read the sons letter. When tie concluded the father said, with teats in hi eves, “My poor boy ! From Mr. Gras tv’s letter to the .Vanufac lurert’ Record. A word now concerning the ores close to Charlestown. Captain John Howard, a practical miner, who has been operating in nid prospding for iron ore f»r fifty years, having provided or s for the old Shannon l.ile furnace, five miles from Charlestown, away hack in lliefmties.talked with uieabout the iron ore supply in this vicinity. “These ore hanks,’’ said he,” contain ores which in mixture will produce » highgradecar-wheel ir>n, and are now l*eing u-ed by the Stick ney Iron Works at Baltimore for car-wheel purposes. .Much of the ore has been ship ped to George Whittaker, below Baltimore, and to various points in Pennsylvania. It will average lully fifty per cent, metallic ir.-n, as all furnace tests have proven.” "From aa experience of forty-five years,” h went on to *.iy, "in furnaces and mines, I am conft lent in giving my opinion that m .st valuable ores, in pr actically inexham l hie quantities, are to be found in unbroken s iatu between the bank of the Potomac and the CAlnegie mine, ten miles above Charles tiwn, in the Shenandoah river. These ores are of e-pccial value, because of the prox imity of the ‘cold short’ and ‘red short’ va rieties ol lym-itite ore. This, taken in con nection with the presence of ao abundance of limestone suitable for fluxing, sl^tiM *erve to at^rg»ct the attention of those trek ing locations* for the cheap manufacture of iroe^a H may be well to add that in Tenn *yl*Vnia these valuable ores, loci ted in the same iron belt, are becoming exhausted, and ores are now being shipped from this coun ty to furnaces in that section..” Prof. W. N. McDonald, a well known Au thority, in a report on the outcrop of a sin gle 13 acres tributary to Charlestown, states tout there is an average of 24,000 tons to the a re from the outcrop alone. But there is no trouble on the score of iron. Note Aii I'm rlhqua Ice Feels. To the average resident* of the tem p-rate zones an earthquake is a rare and terrible event, creating more consterna tion than any other visitation of nature. In the tropics, however, particularly in Central America, it is wonderful how easily the residents become accustomed to these shocks, which do not come wholly without warning. You are sitting on the piazza, ot a hot afternoon, chatting with your friends, When suddenly the sky seems to grow bazv, the crows stop cawing and the buz zards quit fighting in tho street. There i> a general ru-h, and, though you may not know what is the matter, you cannot help feeling uneasy. The old natives say, we are going to have a little shake, and then the house begins to reek, the tumblers fall off the table, you feel deadly sick at he stomach a:nl the thing is all over. The sky clears, the crows begin their noisy screams and the buzzards resume their quarrel over the street offal. There is something inexpressibly terri f/mg, however, about tlic trembling of the earth. The slightest oscillation will awake the population of the whole town, but unless some considerable damage la done, everybody goes to sleep again as a matter of course.
