WiteA?c li ii r n POETICAL. SPiUg&'THE HOBSfi. ? O, teamster spare thfit horse"! How hard he triw to go; There*? load enough lor two, Don't strike another blow,. Give him a helping hand. Or ease the load, I pray. And he your kindness will A thousand-fold repay. *XIow patiently he toils. All through the heat and coftf? A faithful servant still, Though wearied, worn, and old. Poor, dumb, unconscious brute. And yet he seems to know, Caressing-oft the band That deals the cruel blow. What an imploring: look, And what a knowing-eye. And yet without the power To utter e^en a cry. See how he writhes and sha'kete. While"smarting- with the pain; O, cruel driver, pause ! Don't strike the brute again. -Humanity at last, Brought to a sense of shame* "Will punish those who give (Jnneceesary pain. Oh. driver, spare that horse ! How hatd he tries to go ; There's load enough for twa, Don't strike another blow. HUMOROUS. Mixed .Families.?Sometimes we hear of fjueer relationships. A man out West writes to one of the papers, giring his own status as ?follows "I married a widow who had a grown up daughter. My father visited our house very often, and fell in love with my step?daughter nnd married her. So my father became my pon^in-Oaw, and my stepdaughter my mother, because she was my father's wife. Sometime afterwards my wifo had a son j he was my father's brother-in-law and my uncle, for ho was the brother of my step-daughter. My father's wife?i. e., my step-daughter?had nlso a sonhe was, of course, my brother, and in the meantime my grandchild, for he was the son of my daughter. My wifo was my grand-mother because she was my mother's mother. I was my wife's husband and grand child at the same time. And as the husband of a person's grand-mother is his grand father, I was my own grand-fa'her." A Noble Woman.?A steamer was wrecked during o fearful stfirm on Lake Mich igan. On her deck, amidbt the wild con fusion, stood a brave man; his wifo, and two children. As he was an expert swimmer, with great muscular power, ho bound his wife and children to his body and started for shore. He straggled manfully with the angry waves j but soon was compelled to say : "My strength is failing, what shall I do ?" The mother promptly replied : "Drop me and save my babes." But desiring to save her who had walked gentley and lovingly by his side, ho exerted every power to gain the shore. Again the deep cry of agony was heard? " What shall 1 do ?" Amidst the roaring of the stormy billows was heard the calm voice of the wife and mother: "Drop me and save my babes." ? Old Timothy Pickering was a pretty smart man in his day, and they could not take him in when they offered to work on his farm. To one of those chaps, they think they know everything, he put the question if he knew how to build a stone wall. "Yes," said he, "any fool ought to know that." "Well, how is it done ?" said the colonel. "Why, by putting one stone on another," replied the man. "No, not by nny means." rejoined the colonel ; "you know nothing about wall-build ing." '?Well, how then, sir? I would like to know how you would have it done." "By putting one stone on two stones so as to break joints and have a wall like any fool like you could not push over." Good morn ing. A Settlkr's Determination.?"Whero is your house ?" asked a traveler in the depths of one of the "old solemn wildernesses" of the ereat West. "House ! I ain't got no house." "Well, whero do you live?" "I live in the woods?sleep on great Gov ernment purchase, eat raw bear and wild turkey, and drink out of the Mississippi ?" "It is getting too thick with folks about here. You're the second man I have seen within the last month ; and I hear there's a whole family come in about fifty miles down the river. I'm going to put out into the wood's again !" ? "It seems to me that Mrs. G.'s hair was nearly gray a year ago." "Yes, nearly." "But now it is perfectly black." "Ah, yes ; you know she has lost her hus band since then." ? Canned fruit?Canister.
