He was followed and over taken by Jerome Pasley and other men of tho neighborhood, and when they found him he refused to be taken, and drew a pistol and fired upon tho party. The shot took ef fect in the wrist cf Mr. Pasley, who at once raised his gun and Bent a load of bucksnot crushing through the negro's body, killing him -instantly. Gen. R. E. Colston, of Baltimore, has ac cepted the appointment of commandant of cadets at the New York Military Academy, at Fort Washington on-tho-Hudson. Gen. Colston waa for many years before the war professor of strategy and military soienee at the Virginia Military Institute, and is well known through tho South as a soldier, in structor and lecturer. He commanded a di vision under Stonewall Jackson, was for sev eral years after tho war principal of the Cape Fear Military Aoademy, at Wilmington, N C., and served six years on tho general staff of the Egyptian army, commanded two ex peditions into tho ioterior of Africa, and re ceived from the Khedive a decoration as ret ward for distinguished services.
