Ellen Terry's hobby is keeping anni versaries, and it is said she never forgets the birthdays and wedding anniversaries of her intimate friends. Mine. Sardou is a woman of much lit erary ability. She is a recognized histor ical costume expert and has been a great help to her husbaud in mounting many of his plays. New York state lias two women com missioners of deeds acting outside the it ate. Miss Irene Braekett of Chelsea is one, and the other is Miss Edith Blais dell. at llavaua. Olive Schreiner is said to be quite ill at Cape Town. It is further stated that she has received many anonymous com munications denouncing nor for her sym pathy with the Boers. Mine. Modjeska expresses confidence that the decree of the Russian govern ment which banished her in 1S94 will soon be revoked. The decree was caused by words uttered by her in public during the Columbian exposition. Mrs. .lames Brown Potter, who seems to have become a fixture in I^omlon so ciety and stage life, has adopted the fashion of wearing the red rose of Eng land always in her hair at public func tions and another in her corsage. Mrs. E. M. Lafcrriere of Minneapolis, a tenclier of the French language, has been selected by the governor of New Mexico to go to the Paris exposition and exploit the wonderful turquoise mines of New Mexico. The first Mormon woman to enter po lygamy died recently in Salt T^ake City. Iler name was Mrs. K. D. I*. Young, and she was the widow of two prophets. She was born at Paincsville, O.. in 1S24. She married Joseph Smith, the first Mormon prophet, at Xauvoo. Ills., with the con sent of Smith's first wife. This was shortly after the revelation commanding polygamy was handed down. After the death of Joseph Smith she married Brig ham Young. ORCHARD AND GARDEN. Horses ur cat tic should never be pas tilled in an orchard. N The best time to prune the peach tree is early in the spring. Too large and too thick heads on fruit trees should always be avoided by proper pruning. An ounce of nitrate of Boda dissolve*] in four gallons of water is an excellent food for bulbs. There is no danger in turning under clover and planting the land to strawber ries and raspberries, planting in the spring. A good way to destroy plant lice is to dip the affected parts of the plants into a bucket of strong tobacco water or else syrLuge with this solutiou. An orchard plowed every year has most of its seeding roots just below the reach of the plow, while one iu grass runs its feeding roots near the surface. In applying wood ashes scatter them out underneath the tree as far as the branches extend. They should not be applied close up around the stem. As a general rule, after the orchard comes into full bearing it is best to let the trees have the benefit of the whole ground. Clover, however, may be grown. ?St. Louis Republic. OUR FOREIGN COUSINS. Emperor Francis Joseph has appointed Prince Henry of Prussia an admiral in the Austrian navy. The mother of the queen of Holland objects to the title of "dowager." and an official statement has been made by the young queen to the effect that her mother must not bo called "dowager queen," but "Queen Emma of the Netherlands." The kaiser, it is said, takes a great de light in seeing very big men in uniform. It is in tin* blood. Frederick the Great, when he had need of propitiating his irascible old father, used to make him a present of a U foot -1 inch or t? foot 5 inch grenadier. That softened the heart of Frederick William. THE COOKBOOK. Before cooking sweet breads soak them for an hour in mild lemon juice and wa ter. When beating eggs for a pudding, add the sugar to them ami not to the other ingredients. ? A vanilla bean kept in the sugar box imparts a delicious flavor to sugar. The French do this. In recipes "one teaspoonful" means rounded up as much above the spoon as the bowl rounds below. A Spanish onion minced and adderl to an omelet batter in the proportion of one teusponuful for each egg gives a deli cious flavor. "There is no litte enemy." Little im purities in the blood are sources of great danger and should be expelled by Hood's Sarsaparilla. RECENT INVENTIONS.
