SPIRITOFJEFFERSON. Cbaki u Town, Jevfehson Oocntt, W, Va. Telephone Call Mo. DO. TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 1906. Geo. W Haines, - Editor and Proprietor. $1,50 In Advance ; $2 If not Paid in Advance. Democratic Ticket. For House of Delegates, C. M. WETZEL. For County Commissioners, DANIEL HEFLEBOWER, J. W. RIDER. For County Superintendent of Free Schools E. D. TURNER. After extended discussion by the Cab inet the President ordered Attorney-Gen eral Moody to begin a vigorous prosecu tion of the Standard Oil Company. Among other organizations that will attend the Red Men’s big 4th of July celebration in Charles Town will be Shawnee Tribe, No. 2, of Winchester, and Wyandotte Tribe, No. 152, and Band, of Baltimore, Former Democrats are just now in the ascendancy in the Republican party in West Virginia, and the “old liners" are not in it by a good bit. Never mind, boys, you can vote all the same and give the come-overs the spoils. want to see the biggest parade Indians, in all their war paint has taken place since at Jamestown and Poco romantic act, come to the 4th of July. crack cavalry has been in camp here, members the people of have pleasant recollection, a practice march ot about ten days, to include a halt of about three days at the Berryville horse Show, where a series ®f exhibition drills may be given. Won’t our county and town authorities do a little decorating—the former of the court-house and jail, and the latter of the outside of Washington Hall—for the 4th of July. The Red Men will bring an immense number of visitors to our town and county, and this will be but a reason able encouragement ot their efforts and an exhibition of a live, up-to-date spirit. Our former townsman Mr.S.M.Prince, we are pleased to note by the Morgan town Post, has, as southern agent for the Canton Bridge Company, secured the contract for erecting a $22,000 bridge across the Cheat river at Fairfax ferry in Preston county. The structure is tobe( 620 feet in length, four spans of 155 feet each, roadway 16 feet, and bridge to sup port one xoo.ooo pound car. State Superintendent Thos. C. Miller has our thanks for a copy of the West Virginia Insitute Annual, containing the institute program and a great deal of in teresting valuable information concern ing the schools of our State and educa tional matters in general. The book has in it a picture and plan ot the public school building at Uvilla, this county— a model country school-house. Our much esteemed friend Rev. James Battle Ayirett, of Buena Vista, Va., has favored us with a life-like picture of him self as Chaplain of the 7th Va. Regiment, Ashby Cavalry, (the oldest Confederate. Chaplain.) with John (Black Hawk) cook of the old mess, standing beside his chair and looking as faithful as ever. We ap preciate the picture very much, and shall preserve it among our valued collections. Hon. Benj. R. Tilman, ot South Car lina, has a formidable rival forhisseatin the United States Senate in the persun ofCol.W.W.Lumpkin. If Col.Lumpkin is the father ot the charming young lady who so captivated the old Confederates by her burning eloquence at the Louis ville reunion, (and Ave think he is.) he would with her assistance have a power ful lever in his behalf, and Senator Ti 1 man.s pitchfork, we opine, would prove a little avail. The question of bridging the Shenan doah river, which the Spirit of Jeffer son originated and has repeatedly advo cated, is now about to be given a more practical turn by the circulation of peti tions in its favor. These we hope to see generally sigued and endorsed by the right-thinking and publ ic-spirited people of all sections ot the county. Clarke county, our next door neighbor, has re cently erected two bridges over this his toric stream, and surely Jefferson, the richest of the two counties, can erect one if not two. A twenty-six-line patch of paper tacked on the east door of the Heidwohl house at Holl’s pump informs the taxpayers of Charles Town District, in bulk or nearly so, without details, of the expenditure of $10,000 or more of tiie people’s money, l'hvs is another lovely outcome of the memorable special session of 1904.— Prior to that time the law required Boards of Education, where the expenditures for all school purposes in any one school year in said district exceeded three thousand dollars, to publish a financial statement in some newspaper of general circulation, which didn't cost the tax payers two mills on a dollar of their taxts. Col. John T, McGraw has written a letter to the Democrats of Webster coun ty that will apply to WestVirginia Demo crats generally and which is full of good sense. The Col. requests that no con vention instruct nominees for the State Legislature to vote for him for United States Senator, and mferentially for any one. The Col. says that question should not be mentioned, but all energy and tact should be brought into action to get control of theLegislature without re gard as to who will lie voted for for Sena tor. There are other questions of more importance to the people. The chief thing is to get at the iniquitous tax laws that tax every cent’s worth of the farmers’ property, things that were never taxed before and that never should be taxed. The question of railroad legisla tion is another more important matter with the people than the individual who may be elected United States Senator. These questions come right home with telling force to the people in general and j the farmers in particular, and if the' Democrats capture the Legislature the ' matter of selecting a Senator will be promptly and properly attended to. I Fatal Shooting Accident At Duffields. Just before going to press we learn of a distressing accident which accnrred at the residence of Mr. Henry Ronemus, near Duffields, this morning. Little Ralph Morris, aged about 12 years, son of Mr. W. A. Morris, was accidentally shot j by another little fellow. Cornelius Strib ling, of about the same age, son of Mr. Corney Stribling, of Washington City, The weapon was a Winchester repeating rifle, and the shot entered the right side. The wound is believed to be fatal. O’Brien—Herbert. Dr. Robert O’Brien, formerly of Hall town, this county, and Miss Avie Her bert were married in Washington City June 14. Rev. Father Riordan officiating, halpny--Engle. Miss Bertie Engle, of Keller, this coun ty, and Mr. Samuel Halpny. formerly of Wheeling, were married in Harper’s Ferry May 27, by Rev. W, P. Roberts. C, Haithcox, at the residence of the bride’s mother, near Moler’s Cross Roads. Larner—Pierce. Mr. William Angamar Larner, of Bal timore, and Miss Eugenia Sowers Pierce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S.Pierce were married at noon Wednesday at the home of the bride, “Ayrlie,” near Shep hetdstown, by Rev.Dr. Charles Ghiselin. Fulton—Sedwick. Married, at the home of the brides’s parents, Saturday afternoon. June 23, at 4 o’clock, by the Rev. J. P. Stump, Mr. David C. Fulton, of Charles Town, to Miss Bessie Sedwick, daughter of Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Sedwick, of near Luray, Va. The bride was attired iu white silk and carried white carnations and ferns. The groom wore the conventinal black. The only attendants were the two little sisters ot the bride, dressed in white. Af ter the ceremony a supper was served to the immediate family, after which Mr. and Mrs. Fulton, accompanied by Miss Maud Fulton, sister of the groom, left for their home in Charles Town, where they were received with showers cf rice aad many good wishes. The wedding was a quiet one. owing to recent death in the family. The Presbyterian choir, of which tile groom is a prominent member, pre sented them on their return with a silver tea Service, The first arrival of new wheat in Balti timore on Thursday sold at $ 1.25 a bush el, an increase of 15 cents over last year. The West Virginia Bankers’ Associa tion met at Elkins on Tuesday. Hon. Henry G Davis made the address of wel come, and Senator Elkins also delivered an address, in which he spoke of the in come and inheritance taxes, and said that the twentieth century was getting ready for the readjustment of the interests of humanity. The convention was brought to a close Wednesday night with a ban quet at the home of Senator Elkins. Col. James F. Thompson is laid up at his home on South Queen street, suffer ing from the effects of an old injury to his foot, and he is seriously thinking of going to a Baltimore hospital for an operation in the hope of relief. Colonel Thompson injured the foot bv jumping when a boy, and for many years he has been crippled for the greater part of the time. Recently the old wound reopened and has since been giving him a great deal of pain.—Martinsburg World. John Strother Moore, son of Mr. Geo. W. Moore, of this county, has won a scholarship at Washington & Lee Uni versity worth $285. This is one of the highest honors given to the student body by this institution. Strother entered the university directly from the Charles Town High School. Mr. Charles New town Campbell, of this place, graduated trom tue law department of the univer sity with honor, receiving the degree of B. L ; as did also Mr. Samuel Register Neill, formerly of this county, receiving the degree of A. B. We are not surprised, because we know him to be a faithful, laborious, capable pastor, and a preacher of real force. He has decided, however, to ac cept the call to Charles Town, and will enter upon his duties there July 8. He will have one of the most united, pro gressive. and aggressive little churches in the General Association of Virginia, and we feel sure it will be for him and for the church a happy and progressive pastorate—Religious Herald. Rich mond, Va. Attorney Geueral May has just handed down an opinion to the effect that the sheriffs of the respective counties in this State are entitled to the full five per cent, commission on all tax collections before the first day of February. Under the old law it was provided that the discount of two and one-half per cent allowed to all persons paying their taxes in full by the last day of November should be de ducted from the sheriff’s commission, so that the commission on all such collec tions amounted to only two and one-half per cent. The present law, however, which was enacted in 1904. is not specific on this point aud Attorney General May is of the opinion that the discount should be deducted from the amount remaining after the sheriff has received his full five percent.commission. TheBoardsof Edu cation of Jeffersou county will act in ac cordance with the above ruling. Rev. Isaac Ofbsoa. Rev. Isaac Gibson, rector emeritus of St. John’s P.E.Church, Norristown, Pa., who was minfsterin the Methodist Church in CharlesTown just previous to the War between the States, and assistant rector in Zion Church here for a year or more after the war, died in Norristown June 12. Of this cultured gentleman, who was a near relative of Mr. James G. Ald ridge and sisters, and who always held a warm place in the hearts of the people of Charles Town, the Norristown Daily Herald says: Rev. Isaac Gibson was the fourth child and the eldest son of Minor Gibson,Esq., and Elizabeth Pendleton Shackelford, of Virginia, and was born in Rappahannock county, Va , January 30, 1828. On his father’s side lie was of that sturdy Scotch Irish stock which has been so productive of noble men and women in all quarters, and on his mother’s was of the Pendle ton’s. an English family, whose roots run to the time of the Norman Conquest, and which came to Virginia very shortly after the settlement ot Jamestown, and which furnished so many distinguished men to the service of the State and nation. His youth was not passed when he felt that his vocation was to preach the Gos pel, and to that glorious work he devoted nearly sixty years. He served at the Church’s altar in Virginia, West Vir ginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, in the last having been rector of St. John’s, Norristown, from November. 1872,to 1898. and its rector emeritus since 1898 to June, 1906. He was a man of many gifts of mind and heart, and “a workman who needed not to be ashamed,” as with eloquent lips and pen he sought to ad vance the cause of divine truth among men. Both as a churchman and a citizen this community has had the benfit of his wise counsel and faithful service for a full generation and will long feel the in fluence of his zeal for honor, truth and righteousness. He leaves four children, a fifth having died in infancy, and seven grandchildren. His children are: Rev. Jno. S. Gibson, rector of'irinity Church, Huntington. W. Va.; Miss Ethel Gibson, Norristown; M. H. Gibson, Esq., of the Norristown Bar, and Miss Delia P. Gib son, ot Norristown. Look out for the big Indians in Charles Town July 4.
