In the Wheeling Register of Fri day last, we find the following sad new* announcing an accident which resulted in the almost instant death of Mr. O. S. Philpott, who was well, and favorably known to our people, he being the Architect who planned and directed the building of our handsome school bouse: Changed within a few moments from the vigor and activity of the prime cf life, to tho silence and coldness of death. Such was the fato which last night befell O. S. Philpott, the well known architect. Mr. Philpott retired last ovening before the remainder of the family, as he was to leave this morning on a ten days business trip through the interior of the Slate. His wife and members of the family were Bitting in tho parlor engaged in con . versation, when Mrs. Philpott heard a sound as of some person falling down tho stairway leading to the secoud story of the dwelling on Twenty-third street. Mr. Philpott had started down stairs about 10:15 o'clock as was bis custom, to take a glass of milk before retiriug. Mrs. Philpott rushed back to the dining room, in the rear of the parlor, and opening tho door lead ing to the stairway found her hus band doubled up with his face against tho door leading to the alley. He was breathing heavily, and ap parently uncouscious. Mrs. Phil pott took hold of his head to place it upon the floor in order to allow him to breatho more freely. lie was attired in a white shirt and pantaloons, not having entirely disrobed. Members of tho family followed Mrs. Philpott and remained at his side while she started out of the house for a physician. Sho wcut to \V. W. Irwin's phar macy, about a block below, and telephoned to Dr. Schwinn, who was 1 just about to retire, when lie re ceived the message. He responded promptly, aud at once made an ex ami nation to assortain if possible tho extent of the unfortunate man's injuries. A glance sufficed to con vince him that he was beyond med ical aid. Mr. Philpott was lying upon the floor, with his faco up ward, and gavo a few short gasps after the arrival of the physician, expiring at 10:45 o'clock. Tho shock was so sudden that for somo time after Mr. Pbilpott's death the members of his family did not seem to realizo the situation. The wife and mother bent over him u|>on her knees with the faint hope that he would show some signs of re turning to life. Dr. Schwinn did not make an examination of Mr. Pbilpott's injuries, but gave as his opinion that death was caused cither by concussion of the brain or breaking his neck by the fall. By profession an architect, ho soon built up a good trade which was not confined to this city, but extended over the entire Stato. He has prepared plans, and superinten ded the erection ofa number of State buildings. At the time of his death, bo bad under direction the Slate Normal School, at Fairmont, and the new Insane Asylum, at Spencer, Roane county. He has also design ed qaite a number of public build ings in Ohio and the interior coun tios of West Virginia. It was on business connected with public buildings in this State, that he had arranged to leave this morning. Mr. Philpott leaves a wife and family of five children, tho oldest of whom is abont 22 or 23 years of ago. He was straight forward and honest in basiness transactions, and socially was the soul of good fellowship. His was a very jovial nature, and be possessed the happy faculty of transmitting his good humor to those with whom be was associated. He was a sterling Democrat and bad so far taken an activo interest in the present campaign, being a firm believer in the principles of tho Democratic faith. He attended all the party conventions and was present at all of political gatherings of importance. He devoted as much time as possiblo from his active basiness life to the Democratic party, and contributed liberullly toward campaign expenses when called upon. The prosperity and promiso of Point Pleasant lie chiefly in the | numbor and variety of its industries. Whatever can be done to increase] them, either in number or variety' puts tho town lurtlier along and adds solidity to every enterprise in it as well as to tho individual benefit of every citizen. It will bo well to keep a shot gun within easy reach, and to sleep with ono eye open. Thero are a number of people in this community and in tho county, to whom the "Duncan Gold Cure" would bo most beneficial.
