I built a castle in the air, Inniy wild lioyhood'a thoughtless glee; And all the world was good and fair, And every heart was true to me; Till Time's cold blasts, too rudely blown, Shook down my castle, stone by stone. I built a castle in the air, In manhood's morn, and called it Home; And though sweet love and joy were there, Yet winds would blow and clouds would come Andj spite of all my heart's fond trust, 1 felt my castle stood on dust. I built a castle in the nir, A id decked it o'er with wen'th untold; But soon I saw that carking care Was not kept out by bars of gold; And Death would stalk through jeweled doors, And haunt my gilded corridors. I built n castle in the air, Ambition gave the wood and stone; Bnt I looked forth, and everywhere These castles lay on earth o'erthrown, And naught survived but a tarnished pall, Or a shivered tablet on the wall. So Ï ceased these airy domes to rear, For time and thought had made inc wise, Ami taught me how 'twas bootless here To build on aught beneath the skies, And air and earth alike were vain The soul's large longings to sustain. And chastened thus, as calm I roam, What c.irtli refuses, heaven supplies; For the thresholds of my Father s home Shine bright and glorious from the skies; And steadfast now, 'mid life's brief stages, I build me on the "Kock of Ages." The and of (Dur Olio. Longevity. The death of a colored woman in New' Orleans at the age of one hundred and fif teen years is announced. A Texas paper says there is now a black man in Jefferson, in that State, named Quaco, who is, per haps the oldest inhabitant of the United States. Ilis age is placed at one hundred and twenty to one hundred and twenty five. He is hale, hearty, able to do a good day's work, and does not require spectacles. There was living in Los An geles county, California, a few years ago, an Indian woman who was said to have reached the age of at least one hundred and twenty years. A gentleman of our acquaintance, who had frequently conver sed with this ancient woman, assured us that there was no doubt of her great age. Her skin, he said, was more like a piece of tanned leather than anything else, and was almost as impenetrable as the hide of an elephant. She often related events in the history of California which had tran spired more than a hundred years before its settlement'by the Americans. These instances of longevity ballad of "The Three Old Men of Pains wick. remind us of the A pilgrim, so it run«, found a very old man weeping. On asking the cause, he was told that the old man's fath er hail been beating him. The pilgrim remonstrated with the Methuselah for his parcntinl severity, and Icarus that it was called forth by the "old boy" pelting his f rundfather who was up an apple tree. 'he secret of old age has been sought for *n many directions. Cleanliness of the body is generally supposed to contribute there to, Lady Lcwson, who died in Lon don at the age of one hundred and six years, was a decided foe to water. "Peo-, pie who washed themselves," she said, "were always catching cold." Impertur bable self-satisfaction is also commonly re garded as favorable to longevity. Cona ro, who lived an irregular and intemperate life until the ago of sixty-five, but during ihc remaining thirty-five years reduced his diet to twelve ounces of solid food and fourteen of liquids per day, attaiued the perfection of this virtue. In his last trea tise, written when he was ninety-five, he had brought his regimen to such perfec tion that, to quote his own confession, * 'neither the death of grandchildren nor of other relatives or friends coul l make any impression upon him but for a moment or two, and then it was all over." Of Thom as Parr, who is said to have died at the wonderful age of one hundred and fifty flt 1 wo years, the poet Taylor says : Ilia physic wag good butter, which the soil »Salop yields, more sweet than C'amly oil, And garlic he esteemed beyond the rute Of Venice treacle or best mirthrldate. lie entertained no gout, no ache lie felt, The air was good and temperate where he dwelt, While Did ilia lint him roundelays and madrigals. Thus living within bouuds of nature's laws 4>f his long-lasting life may be some cause. Old Parr at last found his Capua in London. There is no doubt that country life, sobriety, regular occupation, but ex emption from wasting care, together with a good constitution and a "desire to live )ong" are favorable to the attainment of -old age. eet-tongued nightingales risses and f Makkiaoz anu Dbatii.—W hy it is that the marriage announcements are immedi ately followed by obituary notices in our ottrn papers?
