m jSetfd Joetrt). T THE SEASONS. 41 À cup for hope I" she said, In the spring-time ere the bloom was old ; The crimson wine was By her mouth's richer red. "A cup for love !" how low, How soft the words ; and all the while Her blush was rippling with a smile, Like summer after snow. 41 A cup for memory l" Cold cup that on* must drain alone ; While autumn winds are up and moan Across the barren sea. Hope, Memory, Love : Hope for fair fair morn, and love for day, An d memory for the evening gray, And solitary dove. r and cold For the Middletown Tranecript. HAIL. AND ITS RATIONALE. Moist air is vulgarly called bcavy, whereas its tendency is to ascend, except when it ceases to exist us air and assumes the form of water or ice. In proportion as air is mingled with vapor of water it is consequently disposed to ascend, but like the flat surface of a wide board at the bot tom of an ocean of water, it ascends very slowly, unless one end of the board is ele vated so that it may approach the surface "end foremost," instead of its broadside. In that case, as everybody has noticed, it is projected much above the surface by the Accumulated momentum or motion and relative weight. Man lives at the bottom of an ærial ooean, or ooean of air, 45 miles deep, and A "flat board" or stratum of vapor of wa ter constantly covers and spreads out in his atmosphere, powerfully disposed to as cend but held down to the surface of the earth by a weight of air above equal to about thirty-six tous on the roof of every house that covers a lot twenty feet square. Sometimes, in the providence of God, ouc end of this board or stratum of vapor gets tilted up and then the whole stratum rush es toward the outlet, precisely as the whole board follows the uppermost eud to the surface of a tub of water when filled while confined by a stone to the bottom and suddenly liberated at one end. A spoonful of air compressed or reduced in bulk to tho size of a pea gives out heat enough to ignite tinder or set on fire a piece of punk at the end of a piston, con sequently if doubled in bulk it absorbs heat or produces cold enough to freeze water, thus expanding as it ascends and is relieved from the enormous weight of our ocean of air. The stratum of vapor expands and not only loses its own tempo rature but enters the region of perpetual cold in the upper air—-the result is the nucleus of hail stones, not only frozen, but reduced perhaps seventy degrees below zero, each capable of freezing a tumbler full of water. Just as a small snow ball, rolled from the top of a hill increases as it descends, so our molecule of ice (or rather snow) increases in size as it falls toward the earth, especially in warm weather, whon the lower stratum of air next the earth will preserve seven-fuld as much water as invisible vapor than during win ter; consequently the size of the hail stone must depend on the heat of the air at the surface of the earth, as the nucleus or original particle in the centre is cold enough to freezo all it meets and cool the air for many miles around. Upon break ing a hail stone this nucleus will be seen as a fibrous mass, and not gradually fro aen as the surrounding dear iee. While beneath the serial ocean we may recognize this and electricity as "supend ed like the sword in the fable by a single hair,"—and invitod by the policy of our Legislators who compel so much swearing and profanity which constantly ascends from every state as another sort of incense should to invoke this in greater proportion in order to avert the infinite and inevita ble result.
