the boy ten years of age wko.it is alleged,
was recently whipped und otherwise tor
tured to death by Ids father, Martin Mera,
reveals a crime of the utoat heartless and
revolting character. Mary Mera, the
mother of the child, testified as follows:
My husband. Martin Mera, whipped my
son Martin, nged tin years, two weeks
ago Tuesday night ; uiy babe was born ou
that day, and l did nut see thu whipping;
it was linin' in uuolhcr room ; I heard the
blows and heard the child beg for mercy ;
the child then went to lied. About tm
o'clock next morning the child came to
my bedroom, followed by his father, who
wus whipping him ; he whipped him very
hard with a Idark-snakc horsewhip; the
child dodged around the room to avoid tho
blows, an I begg -1 for mi rey; the child
was entirely n iked, his father having com
