Mw Castle, October 10 th, 1877. ALONE WITH CONSCIENCE. I sat alone with my conscience, la a place where time had ceased, And we talked of my former living In the land where the years increased, And I felt I should have to answer The questions it put to me And to face the answer and qnestion Throughout an eternity. The ghosts of forgotten actions Came floating before my sight, And things that 1 thought were dead things Were alive wih a terrible might, And the vision of all my past life Was an awful sight to face,— Alone with my conscience sitting In that solemnly silent place. And I thought of a far away warning, Of a sorrow that was to be mine, In a land that then was the future, But now is the present time. And I thought of my former thinking Of the judment day to be, But sitting alone with my conscience Seemed judgment enongh for me. And I wondered if there was a future To this land beyond the grave ; But no one gave me an answer, And no one came to save. Then I felt that the future was present, And the present would never go by. For it was but the thought of my past life Grown into eternity. Then I woke from my timely dreaming, And the vision passed away, And I knew the far away warning Was a warning of yesterday. And I prayed that might not forget it, In this land beyond the grave, That I may not cry in the future, And no one to come to save. And so I have learnt a lesson, Which I ought to have known before, Aud which, though I learnt in dreaming I hope to forget no more. So I sit alone with my conscience In the place where the years increase, And I try to remember the future In the land where time will cease. And I know of the future judgment, How dreadful soe'er it he, That to sit alone with my conscience Will be judgment enough for me. — Spectator. A Beautiful Thought. —The sea ie the largest of all cemeteries, and its slutnberers sleep without monuments. All other grave-yards, in other lands, show some distinctions between the great and small, the rich and the poor, but in the great ocean cemetery, the king and the clowo, the prince and the peasant, are alike undistinguished. The same wavo rolls over all ; the same re quiem by the minstrels of the ocean is sung to their honor. Over their re mains the storms beat, and sun shines; and there unmaf same , the weak and powerful, the plumed and un honored, will sleep on until awakened by the same trump. Just in proportion that a man can be counselled of his blunders, just 40 there is hope for him. A Happy Couple. Â man should al ways be a little older, a little braver, a little stronger, a little wiser and a little more in love with her than she is with him A wo man should always be a little yonnger, and a little prettier, and a little more considerate than her husband. He should bestow upon her bis worldly goods; and she should take good care of them. He may owe her every care and tenderness that affection can prompt ; hut pecuni ary «indebtedness to her will become a bur den. Better live on a crust that he earns, than a fortune she brought him. Neither must be jealous nor give the other cause for jealousy—neithir must encourage senti mental friendships with the opposite sex. Perfect confidence with each other, and reticense concerning their mutual affairs even to members of their own families, is a first necessity. A wife should dress her self becomingly when ever she expects to meet her husband's eye. The man should not grow slovenly, even at home. Fault fiuding, long argu ments, or scolding, ends the happiness that begins in kissing and love-making.— Lovers are lovers no longer after disturb ances occur, and mar ried people who are not lovers are bound by red hot chains. If a man admires his wife most in striped calico, she is silly not to wear it. These are some body's notions, which we find floating a rouod. ClU RACTER—- _ -When the good ship Schiller was steered by a faithless cap tain npon the fatal rooks, and went down slowly in her doom, a group of six people sat in the pavillion, holding each other's hands, calm, praying, awaiting death.— One was a girl young, pelted, sur rounded with lux ury, having 'fed on the roses and laid in the lillics of life,' and one was a scho lar, trained in many tongues, a woman cf science and skill, with a purpose and a career ; and one was a wife and one was a husband, with their consecrated past.
