Sljrpljcriistoron Register. SilTI RDlY-??? n:i?. ??. INN#. THAT IMPOIt riM' WORk. Now w Iron Congress seems to know no bounds to the appropriating of the people's money, fur giving pensions, equalizing pay, erecting statues, educa ting and burying a certaiu class of men, doubting lands to railroads, we think it would be wise to ask that a munificent appropriation be made to make the Potomac river navigable by steam to its source in the Alleghany mountains, or to unite the Western and Eastern waters by a hliip canal and slack water through the mountains. This can be done tor far less millions of dollars than the "Panama canal," and will be much more tangible iu its benefits. The \\ est and the East are deeply interested and can be greatly benefitted by the opening of this avenue ot commerce. The un told wealth of the mines and forests ot t lie mountains ot this State, Maryland and Pennsylvania, would find ample and cheap shipment by this channel to the markets ot the world. Cut asbip canal across Maryland from the mouth of the Monocacy to theCheHaj>eake Bay, thence across to the Delaware Hay, and von will save hundreds ot miles in distance Irom the coal tields and lumber regions ? f .Maryland and West Virginia. From Monocacy to Cumberland the Potomac can be made nav'gabie for large sized vessels at a comparative small cost. Then the cost of uniting the Ohio and Potomac waters is just such an enter prise as such a nation as America should undertake. Come Messrs. Senators and Representatives, let's hear you talk out boldly on this grand business scheme. We have no constitutional ecruples al. out your spending money to make and save money tor the people. CxjT' Woi<K ON THE S. \. 1J. li. IN M vkyi.ano. ? Taking a stroll on Monday h-t over the route of this road from here lo the farm of Mr. B. F. Best & lloppook, are men ot j unh and energy, and with a set of men who know how to work, under the im mediate supervision of their efficient foreman, Mr. C. W. Mutchler, they are n pi illy making tell the effect of their labor. The large culvert, 1G1 feet in length, just opposite this place, ou the farm of v ol Douglas, has been completed and they aie now grading over the satue. Their managers, Messrs. John and James Shean, Hopewell, Angel, Iiearden, O' Brien, Mutchler and Evarts, are gen tleiueu thoroughly conversant with their business, as their work will show. A quarry from which they get some most excellent stone, has been opened ou the Douglas place, in the woods just be yond the barn. With fair weather aud with the num ber of hands now employed, aud which numbe r is being constantly increased, it will not be long before a graded road is completed between here and Hagers to.v n; although, we may say it has hard ly U'en oommeueed. A number of cul v eits, some quite extensive ones, are yet lo be made within the short distance th -.t we tramped over, and much cutting and filling will be required before Sharpsburg is reached. t zlT Fatal Accident.? This was the only mark of injury discov ered on the body, death evidently being caused from concussion. As soon as the accident occurred, Drs. Keynolds and Butler were summoned, but lite was ex tinct. His body was brought to this town, and buried from M. E. Church colored, on Wednesday morning last.
