<$he ^hrphtrttsiairn JScgtsin H. L. SNYDER. Editor and Publisher, Shepherdstown, W. Va. Wm. B. Snyder, Local Editor and Business Manager. Thursday, - - April 6, 1916. A wise old owl sat on an oak, The more he thought the less he spoke; The less he spoke the more he heard? Why can't we all be like that bird ? Call l or Congressional Convention. A convention ot the Democratic delegates of the second congressional district of the State of West Virginia is hereby called to meet at Keyser, in the county < t Mineral, on the 12th day of April, 1916, at 12 o'clock m , for the purp-?se o* non p ting a candidate for Cot gre-s to fnl t'? vacancy caused by the death or Willi i G Brown. Each county is entitled t< one delegate tor each one hundred votes or a fractional pvt thereof over nftv v tecast for William G Brown at the ehctior held in November. 1914 By order of the commith e. Floyd McDonald, chairman. C. M. SEIBERT. Secrrl rv. there is no change in Colonel R? ov velt's opinions since his return from the West Indies. He is still opposed to everybody except Roosevelt. ? There's nothing backward about the Democratic executive committee of Jef ferson county. It deciaea ai us meeting on Tuesday that it would save the voters the trouble of selecting delegates to the congressional convention, and the members of the committee took it on themselves to name the delegates. This is sure setting some precedent. A bill has been prepared by Congressman Bailey, of Pennsylvania, authorizing the government to sink wells on government oil lands and provide competition for the companies that have been boosting the price. This is a good idea, though we rather favor the suggestion of hanging a few ot the leading oil magnates. It would have a better effect. - The Democratic congressional committee of this district held a meeting at Keyser last Saturday, and called a con vention to be held in that city next Wednesday, April 12th, to nominate a candidate for Congress to till the vacancy caused by the death of Hon. Wm. G. Brown. S. C. Young, of Charles Tow n, member of the committee tor Jefferson county, tendered his resignation, he having been appointed a postmaster, and E. E Cooke, of Charles Town, w as appointed as his successor. In another column may be found the announcement of County Commissioner Nelson R. Roberts, who is a candidate for re-election from Middleway district Mr. Roberts has been a member of the county court for several terms, and we think that it can be truly said of him that this important fiscal body has never had a more efficient man in its service. Able and careful and painstaking, familiar with every department of this part of the public business, he has been a most valuable member, and the voters will make no mistake if they return him for another term. + The Democratic executive committee for Jefferson county met in Charles Tow n on Tuesday to arrange for the selection of delegates to the congressional convention at Keyser next Wednesday. A resolution was passed authorizing the mem bers of the county committee to name the delegates and alternates, and in case this is not done, the chairman of the committee is to appoint them. S. C. Young resigned as vice-chairman and member of the committee. Vacancies in the committee were filled by appointing G. K. Wysong and W. F. Alexander in Charles Town, F. H. Mauzy and C. R Rau in Bolivar, and W. H. Rissler at Mt. Hope. HON. G. K. Ku.MP, of Romney, State Senator from this district, wno isseexing re-election, was in Shepherdstown the past week interviewing his friends and the Democratic voters of this section. Mr. Kump finds some disaffection on the part of the voters in Jefferson county, many of whom think that he seriously erred when he voted against the measures placing a special tax on coal and gas and oil at the legislative session ot 1915 Mr. Kump discussed this matter very frankly. He said that he strongly believes in such tax, and showed that he himself had introduced bills providing for this form of taxation. The Republican majority, he declares, gave scant courtesy to his measures, but presented bills of their own party which left out some of the meritorious features that were in his. When the Democratic caucus made these special tax bills a party measure and decided to oppose them, Mr. Kump admits that he was in a strait betwixt two. After long and careful consideration of the matter from every angle, he says that he finally came to the conclusion that he would stand by the party caucus, as he felt that his usefulness would be impaired if he failed to do so, and so he reluctantly voted against the bills. His explanation is satisfactory to those ? L- 2? *#% *? AP tifPAnrv 1 wuu UCIICVC in II&III vi ] But we confess that we deeply regret that the party allowed itself to be used by the great corporate interests of the State into defeating such a supremely beneficial measure. Mr. Kump had his hands tied by partisan bonds, when we should have 7* liked him to have taken the lead as an aggressive young Democrat whose chief desire was the good of all the people. If he should be re-elected?and we do net begrudge him a re-election?we hope and pray that he will use his unquestioned ]( ability and enthusiasm in standing strong tr. tor the thing that we know he believes in >ur and which we know is right. All the blood in the body is coursing through the kidneys constantly to be freed of poisonous matter. Itisa heavy enough task when the kidneys are well, but a cold, chill, fever or some thoughtless ext posure is likely to irritate, inflame and ir congest the kidneys and interrupt the e purifying work.
