Hardesty at the Methodist par, sonagc in New Market, Va., last Monday. John Murnan, aged 76 years, a veteran employee of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, tlicd at his home in Winchester on Monday, following a month's illness from pneumonia He is survived by a widow, fire sons and four daughters. Howard Smith, 18 years old, of MartinsburR, was terribly burned about the legs, hands and arms when a plumber's torch broke as it was being ignited and threw blazing gasoline all over the vouni? man ?. ->?! o?. , ? ? ?=?-1 sisting his father in doing some work in the Interwoven Mills, Martinsburg, when thc accident occurred. The annual tournament was held Saturday at Tilghinanton, Md., nine miles north of Shephcrdstown, a large crowd being on hand to witness thc events. Thc weather being clear, theyI meet was one of the most successful in years. A band and several speeches added to thc enjoyment of thc occasion More than 3,000 people were in attendance at the annual Picnic of thc Shenandoah Farmers' Union held at the Shenandoah county fair grounds. I near Woodstock, Va., on Saturday Senator George B. Kcezel, wellknown for his legislative efforts on behalf of the farmers, made the principal address. Rev. Reginald Dawson, pastor of thc Presbyterian church of Martinsburg. probably saved thc life of the six- i year-old daughter of R. C. Dinecn. of Berkeley Springs, when the child's clothinR caught fire as she was stand ing by ? bonfire some children had started. Mr. Dawson heard thc children's cries, and ran to thc scene, and rolled the little girl in the dust until thc flames were extinguished. Increases of 20 per cent in wages j effective September 1st, paid to corny | mon labor bv the United States Steel j Corporation, thc Midvalc Steel and I Ordinance Company and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, werO I anonunced Tuesday. It was also "n-' nounced that pay of mine and cokd workers in the Fayette region of Pennsylvania would be advanced. The ad vanccs were gratuitous, none of the* plants referred to having any appreciable union strength. Additional machinery w ill be in-, stalled in the Millville plant of the Potomac Public Service Company, it was decided Tuesday at a meeting of the executive committee of the company held in Hagerstown. More generating machicnry is needed at Millville, officials state, owing to the increased demands for power coining from all sections. It was brought out in the meeting that the Potomac com-! pany with all its power plants and water power, is running practically at its fullest capacity all the time when a certain amount should be held in reserve to guarantee service A careful study of the increase in the demand tor power has been made, and officials say that it is reasonable to expect the same amount of increase for the next two years at least. To meet this, the Millville plant is one that will be enlarged and made inorc efficient. G W. Humrickhouse, of this place, has a curiosity that he thinks is vorth mentioning. It is an old bureau that was taken from Fount tin Rock, the hntiir? of ( i * 1 * ... n. i\. r>oto. r, when that place was burned by order of General Hunter during the Civil War The bureau was part'., burned and charred by the flames but Mr. Humrickhousc expects to repair it and put it lit good order Two lr .... met t' St- :J the mornmg Iter an . .rp'ane r .. Discovery of an almost tropical valIcy with rivers of boiling water, many mineral springs, abnormal plant growth and abounding with game in for northern British Columbia is re- , ported by Frank Perry, mining cngi- ! neer of Vancouver, back after 17 years spent prospecting the weird valley close to the Yukon border. The area of the terrain covered by Mr. Perry during his long sojourn in the cold north country is roughly 700 miles north and south and 300 miles wide, between the coastal range and . the Lizard and Fort Nelson rivers. The unusual sight of a heavy fog in a win- 1 tcr attracted him to the valley and , later exploration showed it to be ap- , proximately 200 miles long and 40 j miles wide. Rivers of hot water ran through it fed by hundreds of hot springs, which bubbled out of th* ground in all directions, the steam from these being condensed on rising ; forming the fog which he had first j ! seen from the range crest. Mr. Perry reported that he saw nytny 1 I wild animals. These congregated, | ! due to the luxuriant vegetation made possible by the heat generated by the springs, and in the valley were huni dreds of mountain sheep and goats, | caribou and moose, with also bears and other fur-bearing animals. The moose, almost square from fat wcro so tame, that he has been able to walk amongst them and could almost touch them. The tree growth within the valley was abnormal, Mr. Perry states. The ordinary wild rose hushes were like j trees, with stems as thick as a man's I forearm, so dense that it was impos- J sible to force a way through, while the willows grew to three sizes, and it was possible to walk along the | branches. Some of the trunks of the I latter were fully one foot and a-half through. Vines grew to a length of about <i() feet and nettles and ferns were both of unusual height. Another peculiar feature was that the valley Was free form frost in the winter due to the action of the springs 1 and consequent vapor. Important mineral depositcs were discovered by : Mr. Perry, including gold, silver an (J | copper, iron and oil formations were also found. Postage stamps, ranging in denominations from one cent to $5 are to undergo radical changes as to design nad color, with a view to preventing losses by the PostofRce Department, due to the lack of distinctive features, it was announced. All stamps ranging in denomination from one to seven cents now bear thr | portrait of George Washington, while' an etching of Benjamin Franklin appears on those ranging from 8 cents to $5. The department contemplates retaining the Washington and Franklin portraits upon certain of the stamps, but. it is said, will Slihcti?ii?<? nnr. traits of lending figures in American history on the others. The department was of the opinion, it was explained, that differetn de- ' signs and colors would enable postal employees to detect more readily short ! ! paid matter. Cancellation marks | stamps frequently obliterate the numerals, officials pointed out, but with j a change in color and design of strik- | ( ing contrast and dissimilarity fewer , mistakes, they added, would be made and the department in time would save thousands of dollars. What Causes Lightning? There have been many theories advanced to account for the source of at mospheric electricity, but perhaps the most generally accepted one is that of j George C. Simpson, in which he con- 1 eludes that when drops of water arc broken up in smaller drops the water becomes positively charged and the air negatively charged. Drops of water larger than .2 of an inch in diameter are unstable when falling through air and drops smaller than -2 of an inch in diameter do not attain a velocity greater than eighteen miles per hour. In all thunder storms there is a reason to believe that there are ascending currents of air with a velocity greater than eighteen miles per hour. Therefore, at the top of the nee. n.tim air currents there will he a large ,ucumulation of water This water is constantly growing front smaller drops into drops large enough to he broken. Bach drop has an equal charge of positive and ncga:ive electricity an,1 every time a drop breaks the w tor retains the positive charge an i the air takes the negative charge away. The positively charred v iter remains in the form of a cloud. When the charge on the ground hcc >m.- great enough, an electric di?ch; rge. or fl ish of light1 ning occurs h tv .-i -hc cloud and the earth.
