Naval Battle.— Part of the enter tainment for the Fourth will be a naval battle on New Lake between two first class frigates. Mb. Reese, on the old Pemberton Clif ton farm, has eight acres in melons. lie will be able to ship thirty tons if his crop yields well. TnE Middletown Academy was struck by lightning, on Tuesday evening last, and set on fire, but was soon extinguish ed. No one hurt. It has been decided to hold no camp meeting at Spring Branch, but Harring ton is considering the propriety of hold ing one at the old place. Hon. James Williams purchased at sheriff's sale, on Tuesday last, a farm of 293 acres, near Kenton, with 5000 peach trees thereon, all for the sum of $1675. Harrington is now entirely cleansed of small pox. There hare been no new cases for three weeks, and those who have had it have recovered and cleaned Visitors are seeking the seashore. up. Milford's money making propensi ties will be subordinate to her patriotism on the coming Fourth of July, and the result is that business will be suspended on that day. Resign. —All Federal office holders are notified by the President to resign their places on all political committees. They are to become public servants and nothing else. Raspberries sell so high that tbe evaporaters cannot afford to cure them. There will consequently be very few avaporated or dried raspberries on tbe market next year. Anthony Higgins Esq. sailed yes terday in the steamer Ohio from Phila delphia for Liverpool. He proposes to spend two months in Great Britain for the benefit of his health. Rev. George Bradford will preach in tlie school house at Harrington on Sunday next at ten and a half o'clock, a. m. The citizens of tbe town and vicin ity are invited to attend. Farmers who don't take the papers are selling their wheat at $1,50. No reader of tlie News and Advertiser will sell at this price in haste. It is now worth $2.00 in Philadelphia. It seems that the Trustees of the Alms house of this county (Kent) have had to borrow $1,000 for the use of tlie Alms house when they have $1,500 more this year than last year allowed by the coun ty. The disposition among farmers is to get their wheat to market early, belie ving they will obtain better prices there by. They ought in our judgment to hold it back unless it will clear them $1.75 per bushel, Barrels are manufactured by chiuery, on a large scale at Frankford in Sussex county. We will bo obliged to correspondent in that town for a full account of the factory and the cost and quality of the barrels. Died.—O n Saturday last Joseuh Dick erson, son of Josiah Dickerson, living near Williamsville, Kent county. He had been in delicate health for some time, but died suddenly and unexpectedly while sitting in the doorway. The Debt on the Dover Confer ence Acadesiy,.— Last week at the commencement exercises, a Committee of three from each District in the Wil mington Conference was appointed to raise the sum of $20,000, payable in five annual payments. The Cbapel will give an excursion on next Tuesday week, July 10, by rail to Lewes aud then a trip by steamer around Cape May, giving a view of the Dela ware Breakwater and points of interest on Cape Island. Fare for the round trip from Milford, $1. John J. Eosa Esq. Master of the StateJIrange is erecting two large evap orators on his fine fruit farm near this town. One is "The Grier Machine" and the other „The Automatic, capacity of his factory will be about 250 baskets of green peaches per day. The branch railroad to be laid along our wharves by the J. & B. Co. meets with the approbation managers of that line, aud it is suggested that the Company will build it provided Milford busiuess men will subscribe tbe money to the stock of the Company. The Harrington and Queenstown Railroad.— If Baltimore ever proposes to make an effort to retain tbe trade of the "Eastern Shore', nothing that she can do has so much promise in it for her. as the construction of the 40 miles of Railroad from Harrington to Queens town. W heat Harvest,— The wheat crop in this locality is now cut and stooked in the fields, and the yield promises to be a good one. We hope to hear from every farmer in this vicinity who has a crop of a thousand bushels or more. It ought to sell now for not loss than $1.75 a bushel. Masonic Parade. — There was a grand masonic parade in Dover on Sat urday last in honor of "St. John's day," whatever that is. A thousand colored masons from all parts of the State assem bled in Dover, and headed by two bands of music with flying banners and a dis play of masonic emblems marched through the principle streets and held a f raud palaver in own. ma our The of some of the one of the halls of the Rev. Church, has purchased a tent erected at Fourth and Lombard Sts , Wilmington, j where he preaches every Sunday,and has organized a church with the Bible for a creed and the second coming of Christ their only hope of a resurrection Sunday School Picnic.— The teach ers and scholars of the Protestant Epis copal Church Sabbath School, had a pic nic party on Tuesday last in the grove near "The Tub M ill. " The whole school participated, and under the good man agement of the Rector of the church it was made a very pleasant festival occa sion. Oun Snip Yards.— Tlie large three masted schooner in Carlisle's ship yard is now all timbered up and the ceiling planks in. Next week the workman will commence putting on the bottom. They s pushing the work. The schooner in Marshall and Abbotts yard is also well advanced and she will be made ready for service in early Autumn. HID Tabernacle at Keiiobotii.— The Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Associ ation have employed a man in Wilming ton to build a tabernacle on the camp ground, to occupy the space surrounding the platform. The Tabernacle is to be 40 by 60 feet, so constructed as to be ea sily enlarged when necessary. The trees now growing on the space where the tabernacle is to be, will be cut down and posts made of them upon which the roof of the tabernacle is to rest. The J. & B. Railhoad agents will sell excursion tickets at all the stations on their lines to Milford and return on the 4th. of July at a very low rate, p rob ably not exceeding $1.00 from any sta tion for the round' trip ; while it will be much less from most of the stations The train will run from all stations in the morning and return late in the eve ning. The tickets will be good on any of their trains for that day. This will give an opportunity for everybody to visit this town at small cost. Road Making.— There are a few principles to be observed n making or mending roads that ought :o be burned into the brains of overseers. First,keep water from standing on them. Second mend clay roads with sand and sandy roads with clay. The first may be effect ually carried out by drainage and mak ing and keeping the road bed oval. Scoop out the sides but never make a ditch along tlie road side. They are exceed ingly dangerous and the overseer that allows a ditch along the road ought to be punished. It will pay in the long run to haul clay for sandy roads a considerable distance, and also to haul sand or loam for clay roads. The Peach Growers' Meeting.— The final meeting of the peach growers at Middletown on Friday last was quite aslormy one, and general dissatisfac tion with the new terms offered by the Delaware Railroad Company was freely expressed. The terms offered were not agreed to, and this leaves the whole sub ject open and the plans of the transpor tation companies will no doubt be si lently and sullenly acquiesced in,because the fruit growers cannot help themselves. No combination seems to be possible among them. In all tlie negotiations and discussions, Mr- Biggs, the Chair man of the Committee to confer with the railroad authorities, has been accused of pandering for personal considerations, to Mr. Hinckley's passion for tbe Dela ware Railroad. Internal Revenue Changes,— Tlie addition of the two Peninsular coun ties of Virginia to the Delaware Dis trict has necessitated changes in the Deputy Collector's Divisions as follows : 1st District, comprising New Castle and Kent counties, of Delaware; 11. If. Prettyman,Deputy Collector; office, Wil mington, Del. 2nd District, composed of Sussex county, Del., Worcester and Wicomico counties of Maryland, with James F. Anderson Deputy, office, Milford, Del. 3rd District, comprising Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, and Caroline counties of Maryland, L. A. C. Geary Deputy, office, Port Deposit, Md. 4th District, comprising Dorchester and Somerset counties, Md,, and Acco mac and Northampton counties, Va., J. E. Graham, Deputy,office,Church Creek. Delaware State Temperance Society. —The temperance people of Wilmington have organized a State ciety under the above title and its work is set forth in the following Constitu tion : Believing that the time has arrived in the history of the temperance reform in the State of Delaware, when we are called upon to organize a State Temperance Alliance as a great motive power in years to come, to educate the public mind, keep tlie subject before the children, work in unison with tlie blessed church of God, all temperance so cieties, ministers of the Gospel and Christian men and women throughout the whole State of Delaware; therefore, Resolved. That the following articles be adopted: Article 1.— Temperance literature will be circulated, schools will be visited, and the pledge introduced wherever God may direct. Article 2.—Our motto will be Fear God and do good to all mankind. Article 3.— Knowing from past experi ence that the liquor traffic is a powerful ene my to contend with, being fully intrenched behind avarice and appetite, opposed direct ly to the church or any organization that weakens its power, we are fully convinced that the time for action has come, and while we shall labor to save the. fallen, we shall atthe same time do all in our power to annihilate the traffic and rid our lovely Delaware of tlie dark blot that now rests upon her. Article 4.—The organization shall con sist of President, Secretary, and a list of Vice Presidents, with others to be added from time to time, as the officers may think expe dient. Their headquarters shall be at Wil mington. The Secretary shall keep a strict account of all proceedings. The treasurer shall render an account of all money received mid paid out,and no contracts Bliall be enter ed into without the consent of the President. Article 5.— Agents will be appointed to raise funds and speakers will he sent to any part of the State, either oil the Sabbath or during the week, whenever the clergy or friends of the cause may de9ire them. Article 6.—Any person may become a yearly member by paying one dollar, into the Treasury, and a life membership with a beautiful certificate by paying the sum of twenty dollars. Seaford, Del. Junk 27.1877. Mr. Editor:—W e hear from you once a week, but suppose that, you very seldom hear from Seaford, a very hand some and quiet town on the Nauticoke river. The town is remarkably quiet to-day, tlie Sabbath School of the M. E. Church, numbering about two hundred and fifty scholars, with the officers teachers and a number of citizens, has gone on an ex cursion and gala day to Cambridge, Md. Our farmers have nearly all completed their harvest,and the reports are all good in regard to the crop. Some say they never had better. Our town was enlivened on Monday morning last by the marriage of one of our most interesting young ladies : the Bev. T. J. Williams, pastor of the M. E. Church, at the residence of the bride's father, Mr, George W. Emory,of Bj WilkèsbSrre, Penn., to Miss Cora Cot tinghara, of Seaford. After receiving the congratulations of their friends auu partaking of a bountiful supply of re freshments they took the cars via Phila delphia and New York for Chicago. They will be absent some six weeks and will then return and make their home Cato. with us.
