Zane ami his brothers, with Col. .Shep-1

spirits, and acted a prominent part In {

Tiver pitched his encampment at the
mouth of tlv present well known
Wheeling creek, where ho proceeded 1
with th?* discharge of his missionary du
ties among the red men of the forest.
After a few months' stay" he departed
and left a name behind him which will
distinguish this celebrated spot till
lime shall be 110 more, since which it is
written Wheeling."
It is staled in a communication to the
Amtricun J'ionrcr, that Wheeling was
originally called Weeding, which sig
nifies the place of a head. The follow
ing tradition explanatory of this was
obtained from Mr. John brittle, who
was taken prisoner by the l)ehiwares,
lived with them live years and acquired
their language. In the earliest period
"j the settlement of Pennsylvania, some
white settlers d? sceilded the Ohio river
inu boat, and stopping at the mouth of
Wheeling Creek were killed by the Del
aware*. The savages cut ott* t lie head of
one of their victims and placing it 011 a
pole with the face towards the river
called the spot Weeling. The Indians
informed Mr. Brittle that Ihehead was
placed there to guard the river.

of refuge for the early settlers stood
somewhere m ar the site now occupied '
by the Second Ward Market House. It!
was imilt on open ground aiicl coveredii
space of-abouttliree quarters of an acre.
In form it was a parulelogram, having n
block house at each corner, with lines of
stout pickets, about eight feet high, ex
tending from one ldoek house to the
other, and enclosing the whole.
The history of the seige of this fort in
1777, and the thrilling incidents con-1
neeted with the gallant defence of the ;
heroic garrison have become matters of!
history with which every one is familiar.1
A traveler in this region in 1802, de

He writes, "at present it contains about j
seventy houses, built of planks and sep- j
crated by an interval of several toises. |
Tliev form only one street, having one
vtnul in the middle. Hero tire twelve or ;
fifteen well provided stores from which
the inhabitants fi>r twenty miles round ;
itre supplied. This small town also par- |
tieiputcs in the exportation trade, car

t?rn country. Several of the traders of |
lMiilntlelphia prefer sending their mer
chandise here, although it is a day's
journey further. This slight inconve
nience is amply compensated by the
advantage they derive in avoiding the
long circuit made by the Ohio on quit
ting l'ittsburg, and the numerous shal
lows which retard navigation during
the summer."
If this writer could visit Wheeling at
tlw present time, lie would t\ntl cause for
great astonishment, ami would also find j
that his vi'ws in regard to shipments to;
the West hud been well sustained, and 1
that not only a few but thousands of the j
merchant^ of Philadelphia, and the east i
S'T'kthisasan outlet for their products I
r and merchandise. The following sta- (
tistioswill give some idea of the steady
growth of the city in population: In;
1>10 the population was 014; in 1S20,

1SG0, 14,os>. At the present time the
population, not including the suburbs,
is estimated at 20,000.
The steady Uud rapid increase of our
population is significant, but is not so
irreat an indication of the progress of
lur city as is the increase of our whole
sale business houses and manufactur
ing establishments, and the changed
pursuits of the inhabitants, all of which
art solid, substantial and permanent in
thtir character, and will remain and in
crease through all the mutations of
traoo and commerce.
Tlio population in the earlier history
of the city was of that character pecu
liar to the times and the organization of
Southern society. It lacked a spirit of
industry and enterprise, and was dis
posed to a life of rollicking ease. As
the advance of civilization brought
wealth and security to the sons of the
early settlers, they gave themselves up
to the sports and enjoyments of the day,
hunting,' lishing, horse-racing, and otli
fashionable amusements of the time oc
cupied the attention of the wealthier
portion of the community. The poorer
classes were infected by the same spirit,
aud only performed such an amount of
labor as was actually necessiuy to ob
tain a subsistence, the larger portion of
them iinding employment on the river
during certain portions- of the year,
whereby they obtainad sufficient means
to enjoy t ho seasons of idiqiicss aud to
participate in the frolicsome sports of
the day; a few of the more enterprising
availing themselves of the great natu
ral advantages of the place as a point of
communication between the Kast and
"West, established themselves us com
mission and forwarding merchants, and
as such were extensively known
throughout the country. The great
natural advantages of the location as
a manufacturing site soon began to
attract the attention of capital and en
terprise; the location of the national
road through this section of the "country
gave an impetus that has steadily tended
to increase and* devclpj) these great na
tural advantages. In later years the
opening of the various lines of railroads
centering at this point, has served to
make Wheeling one of the most import
ant points in the West. Her shipping
facilities, with herinexhaustiblo supply
of cheap fuel, has made her Essentially
a manufacturing city. These natural
advantages lias also attracted capital
and enterprise from abroad, and in fused
into her people a spirit of industry and ,
zeal that luA placed Wheeling in the
first rank among the manufacturing
cities of the country. Her nails, glass,
railroad iron, wagons and cigars have
obtained a national reputation and now
take precedence of all others in all the
markets of the Union. Her population
is of the most industrious character,
and there is not another city of her size
that is as free from that contemptible
fliaracter and drone called loafer as the
i city of Wheeling. She has nobly stood
; bv the government In our great national
struggle, and as a border city in what
| was the leading southern State, has
i made a record of which she will never
j have occasion to bl usli. Her prosperity
i is established on a sure foundation, and j
? the dawn of her future is brilliant with
I the prospect of success.
j The following list embraces, as we
believe, all the manufacturing estab
lishments and business houses of the
city. We have endeavored to make it
as complete as limited time and oppor
tunity would permit. It is possible
that some may have been overlooked
t hat should have apijeared. Tf there be
any such omissions, we assure all those
interested that i? is not intentional, as
we have desirodthat every house should
appear under its proper heading. We
have also found some difficulty in prop
erly classifying some of the houses
where they were engaged in a mixed
business, embracing different branches
of trade, or where the parties were
both manufacturers and merchants.?
Our space not allowing us opportunity
to multiply the headings, as far as prac
ticable, the list has been arranged in
alphabetical order, without refereiicQ to
the extent of the business done- by" the
different houses or firms.
