SUOBTED LOVB TCBXS TO HATE.? The fact that "slighted love tarns to hste," sooner or later, was demonstra ted (In one instance) on last Thursday, the particulais which we give only be ing brought to light by tho most perse vering efforts on our part. About five or six years ago a maiden, of prepos sessing appearance, was wooed and won by a young gentleman in this city; and through his apparent earnest protesta tions of love and solemn promises of marriage, she yielded up to him hervlr tue and became a prey to his mercy and honor. These virtues in him having become utterly extinct, he soon thereaf ter Jilted her, and she thenceforward gave herself op to her own secret sor row. Previous to this unfortunate oc currence, there never had been the least occasion to reproach her conduct/lior has there been since, up to the present time. It seems these long intervening six years have by no means obliterated from the young lady's mind the wrong and disgrace Inflicted npon her, but it has grown with her growth and ntrengbtened with her strength. On Thursday last she heard thst ho was stopping at one the hotels in tho city (he having removed from this place a few years since) and she provided her self with a pistol and repaired to the hotel. She met and tried to shoot him, and the weapon failing to fire, the guil ty psrty, who immediately recognized his victim, wrenched it from her grasp and himself tired the pistol in the air. A short consultation then took place between them, when they retired to a room and held a private Interview of some length, the result of which we are unable to state. "We rqfiraln from giv ing the names of the parties in consid eration of the friends on both sides. Kivkr Nkwh.?The river yesterday was running quite free of ice. The Eagle left this place, at eleven o'clock In the forenoon, for Parkers burg, with a full passenger and freight trip. The Qoldeii Era passed down about 10 A. M., to Portsmouth. The ZanesviUe leR here yesterday morning for Bellaire, to carry passen gers and freight froin the Baltimore 1 tail road to the Central Ohio?across the Ohio river. Therb was a large attendance at the market yesterday of both buyers and sellers. Prices ranged about the'same as on Tuesday. Wo notice the J follow ing prices: Butter, 35a40c.; eggs, 30c.; chickens, S5c.; apples, 76c. per peck: lard, 18a20c.; cranberries, 20c. per quart; potatoes 40c. per peck ; turnips, 20c. per peck ; rabbitkg, 20n25c. per head; parsnips20c. per half peck; onions 40c. per peck. Persons going Up Main street after [ dark, have noticed that the gas lamps have not been lighted for the past few evenings, while on Market street they were In full blast. ' The on?$e ft*.A at tributable to the fact that there was water in the gas pipes. I>aat evening workmen were engaged In pumping the water off, and now Main street may expect light. Wi received a letter yesterday from Independence, Texas, ordering the Iw TKL.i.iQitNCBR, and enclosing us twelve dollars, eleven of which was In the Bank of Phlllippl, and the other dollar in tho Jeffersonville branch of the North Western Bank. The notes look a* thongh they had undergone a good deal of persplratlou. Gex brae. T. M. Harris delivered a lecture, last evening, in tho Fourth Street Methodist Church, for the bene fit and in behalf of tbo Freed men. The General's discussion of the question of the Freed men's claims was clear and convincing, and we regret that there wn.i not a larger audienco in attend ance. _ It is reported here thst Mr. James Phillips, of this city, lately connected with the steamer Missouri, plying be tween New Orleans and St. Ixmia, has been appointed Supervisor and Inspec tor of the port of New Orleans. If this lie true, it will be a source of gratifica tion to his many friends hereabouts. As tub attempt has been made in this city, by a lady, to shoot a gentle man, It may not be amiss to say that a female was sentenced recently, in Phil adelphia, Pa., to seventeen years' im prisonment, for shooting nnd killing two men. Her name was not Mary Harris. It is said there is a movement on foot to organise a stock company in Cincin nati, with a capital of one million dol lars. for the purpose of organising a line of packets to ply between Cincin nati, Wheeling and Pittsburg, and in termediate ports. In St. Louis a fine of three dollars is j Imposed upon every owner of * dog. From a bearable and seeable stand point we should judge that aoch a lawthere would bring a large revenue. They ought to be " stamped." Therr was no police court yesterday. We notice that several of our neighbor ing cities speak of the good conduct of their citizens. There is always a calm before a storm?and If the latter culmi nates here we will make a note of iu The interest of the American Bible Society will be presented In the North Street M. E.
