Editors Intellirrnccr: llnving been an almost regular attendant at the senca of temperance meetings which are now being held in our city, we have become favorably impreMed with the good work, as we think a great many others are, judging from the apparent interest and sincerity manifested; and, if you will allow us the space in your columns, we think we can make a suggestion which will meet with commendation by tho tern iterance jteople. It is to try to persuade people to abstain from the use of tobacco in all it * forms. We sav people, because men, women and boys use it. In justice to the ladies, however, wo fliould remark that it is not general with them, being used mostly by old ladies in pipes. Now, wo think there are fewer arguments in favor of tobacco than strong drink. Whisky, it is claimed, is taken as medicine, for health, and in winter to stimulate and keep warm, just as beer is taken in summer to keep cool, and we don't know of anything tobacco is claimed to U- good for, except to consume money and injure health, which it certainly doe*. We have heard speakers at the UiUerent temperance meetings give their experience," and tell what a horrible looking spectacle they were at times, but we don t think they coulil look muoh worse than a boy of twelve years of age, or less, with one cheek puffed out with a big piece of tobacco?his teeth black and half rotten, sometimes lipe chin and shirt-boeom atained with spittle, and ?'?ry minute or twoTeliering himself of a mouthful of the horrible stuff. Such acenes ire witneeeed wrjr dav. A more difgueting sosne then even this haa met our face at aome of the temperance meetingn. Home lew times we have had the misfortune of being late at the meeting*, and have had to resort to the galleriea or back seats, and there have been witnesses of five or more bova or young men, each seeming to think it hiit duty to contribute as much tobacco juice as possible to a pool inch as Dr. Logan deacribed at the Fourth Street M. E. Church Wednesday evening, when he said a (tool of three feet squsre had been diacovered after the meeting. Ugh! lt'R enough to turn the atomach of a rhinoceroa. It may be judged what kind of a mesa ia made when we heard Mr. List, at the Fourth (Street M. E. Church the other evening, compare the portion of the church where aome bovx were uaing tobacco to a hog-pen. 1 ndeed, we don't believe we have attended a single meeting since the temperance work began in this city that we haven't heard some gentleman speak to the boya in regard to chewing tobacco. We could point out many more of the bad featnrea of tobacco chewing and amoking, and we know those that use the "filthy" weed could point oat still more than we can, but we think we have ahown enough of the bad qualitiea (and it haa no good one*) to convince the people generally that it ia almoat a* worthy of condemnation aa intoxicating liquora. Hoping the matter will receive prompt and proiier attention at the handn of thove who art* prepared to take it in charge, close, feeling assured that if tobacco and whiaky arc banished from our midat the err for Mmorr mnn?? ?nblN ol the Southern State* iu tonurctioii With Their Politic* Washington, March 15. ? A very heavy commercial interest in the North is actively at work trying to hasten action in the Louisiana and South Carolina matter*, in order that a plan that they have lor compromising the debts of the Southern States may, receive aid from the settlement of the political troubles. They urge that the adjustment of these debts on a satisfactory basic will go far toward restoring the credit and material interested the Mouth, and that it is a branch of Southern a Hair.- only second in importance to the political problem. They have made proposals to all the Southern legislatures to agree to an issue of new bonds, for the defaulted principal and interest at the rate of sixty cents on the dollar, with certain conditions in regard to the future legal debt to be contracted. These propositions must be acted upon in about ten days, within which time nearly all the Legislatures will adjourn. IV capitalists interested think their success will depend largely upon the action taken bv the administration in regard to the pending political troubles. If these are quietly nettled, they believe the tinancial ditiiculties in most of the Southern State.- can l?e speedily diminished and put in a fair rear iur sausixciorv settlement. Dir.
