I Mm. Cuylet ha* never done any paittoral
i work. She lives in an elegant mansion
on Oxford street, Brooklyn. She is a
; ludv ol elegance and retlnement, and
whatever socicty work has been needed
i haa been performed by Mr. Cuyler's
mother. She rossetnhlcs her son in size
and nervous force, and the prosperity of
the Layfayette Avenue Presbyterian
; Church owes vwy much to the inaouiital
bio energy and untiring labors o( this
lady. Jdrs. Talmage is very popular in
the parish. She is the center ol' its Social I
| life. Oho presides over tho social gatherings
of the church, although she does no
, visiting. She is a ludv of medium size,
with a cheerful and sparkling presence,
decidedly talented, but not offensively
prominent. Nobody annova Mrs. Duryea.
She is a lady of feeble'health, and can
scarcely attend to her home duties. Her
husband'* church has, what nearly every
important New York church possesces,
one or more ladies of wealth and culture
who make it their especial business to
look after the social business of the

Tiik Catholic Young Men's National
Union hold their third annual convention
in New York, at the De La Salle institute
on Second street, Wednesday, May
30. This is a representation of the various
young men's associations, sodalities,
etc., through the United States; its object
is "the progress of the church." To quote
from the call for the convention : "The
growth of the church in our country has
been truly wonderful, but its continued
advancement must depend in a great
measure upon the loyalty of her young
men. We are surrounded by influences
hostile to the faith, and, that we may not
bo misrepresented or misunderstood, intelligent,
organized effort is necessary.

Arnopos to recent chtirchly denunciations
of dancing, the Christian Rtgvier
quotes Norman Macleod's festive verses
for his children, for whoso dancing he
used to hire :t piper, and adds : "l'robaMy
there nre' few evangelical manses in
this country where the children are
bo bravely provided with this innocent re.
creation, but the sooner a more liberal
policy in adopted the bolter it will be for
all concerned. Even Mr. Moody's children
ought to acquire a relish for the
grates and delights of cotillion' partite,
and Master Harry Ranker should take
lessons of I'upanti the next time he visits
Boston. Thin important part of the
youth's education need not conflict with
lii.t exhortations at the boys' prayer meeting,
for religion and recreation, dancing
and . devotion, aire perfectly compatible.
Tbero is a time for merriment a* well as
