'I i'.lilora lutclligcoeer: I left Wheeling on Thursday morning * l ist for a abort visit to this city, taking passage on the Mai lift Ragoii. I found y tho oiiicerfl very attentive and generous. , Reaching 1'arkersbnrg about one o'clock i: in.the night, and soon Undine ray way t to tho Swann House, I wja shown to u v well-kept room, with a very nice bed; on a this 1 nlept bo fact that 1 regained the ? rest which I hail lost en route. In duo '' time 1 was ready to enjoy a very nice " breakfast. After this I became the guest 2 of my friend Kev. C. E. Manchester, who, ? by the way, has made many warm friends a during the few weeks ho has spent here tl as pastor of the M. E. Church. The \ people of this congregation very kindly a remember their former pastor j Kev*. A. K. <1 Reiley, now stationed at Thomson M. K. ? Church, Wheeling. j1 The M. K. Church here is a fine build- J ing. It Ktaudn fronting Littleton street. Jj The lot contains half a square with about e 200 feet front, so that our people here can j, keep folks, on the outside at leant, at a r respectable distance. The trustees might l, sell oil' a choice building lot for a good n price, if necessary. This, however, ought not to be done. These beautiful grounds suouiu ni once uc pianieu wun ornamen- i ml shade trees and beautified for .Sunday school entertainments and religious social gatherings. The auditorium is in an uuiiuighed condition. The lecture room it) largo ami seats a good audience, but lecture rooms won't draw. It matters not how popular the preachers, no man ? i l?as a fair chance in a basement, and it r will lie very dillicnlt to hold the |M?ople ,j when they can lind better accomuioda- g lions and more attractive places of wor- -| fliip elsewhere. A. dull and poorly ventilated place of worship has a very de- c pressing effect upon both the speaker and i i lie hearer. There is now a debt of about to,000 on the property, but the congrega- Jj tion is wealthy and liberal, and no doubt * :n noon ns it may be done safely, steps will be taken to cancel the debt and com- f plete the building. ' I The Episcopal Church is being torn J down. A tine new Church is to be erected j >n tho old Mite. I learn that the money t iii already provided for this work. The llupust Church is a new ami ele- ^ gant building. It is now being completed anil will be really for* nn upper room opening in a few weeks. The internal linUfh in very nice, and somewhat unique. <1 The pastor of this Church, Kev. Mr. v Carter, is a very earnest Christian gen- t ilornan, and is to be Tound in tin; front in > 111 good work'. He has held his present }J charge about thirteen years. ^ The Southern 'Methodist 'Church is j well sustained. Its pastor, Kev. Mr. ^ Wade, is an evangelical man, and a strong j friend of fraternal relations between the , two Methodism*. This fraternity, he practices and inculcates in every legiti- 1 mate way. n The I. S. Custom House is a model of 1 modern, architecaral beauty, Its beauty * consists in its external symmcty. It J has three stories, with a basement. It . looks neither too high nor too low. Its t proportions are better than those of the t .State House in Wheeling. About $200, c nOO have been expended upon it,' and the I end i* not yet. U is novf nurrounded by n the most itulsUuitial Fcafl'olding i have t <*ver peen around a building of similar 1 <ize. This indicates great and wise care 1 on the part of the contractor. There is * "(ten inexcusable carelessness in erecting -caflolding. 1 believe builders ought to be held responsible in law for the loss of limb or lite, from want of care In this t matter, jiut as railroad companies are. i The preachers' meeting is held on Mon? j day's anil is attended by all tho Protestant j eleri:ymen of the place, oxoept the rector i ?'{the KnUcnn-.l I'l.nrnK ? 1 .t - y'" * t are informal ami social. Each pastor i gives an out-lino of his Sunday's sermons. I No criticisms were made; no one stood t to give his out-lino; no one add re wed the j chair on a single occasion. It *a? ? more conversational than otherwise, j The social element is largely cultirited, i and brotherly love prevails. The temperance revival is at a while J heat. Two prayer meetings a day, well i attended. It waa my privilege to attend I a mass meeting in the market house on Sunday nfternoon. There must have been U,000 persona present. Addresses weremailoby Kev. Sir. Carter, Senator n Scott, and lion. J. A. Hutchinson and j Mr. Kemple, of Wheeling, (your humble j servant only saying enough to put him- j, telf on the record). At this writing t 1 twelve hundred or more have signed the n I pledge. The city pastors had temperance ser? " vices in their churches on Sabbath even- ll ing. Mr. Hutchinson announcedonSun- T 'lay afternoon, at the mass meeting, that ^ tI.'jOO had already been secured to estab* ? ,franco l.brary ami reading , oom forlaUicsjnd gentlemen.
