Dr. Hays, President of Washington College, in atudjing law in the office of ex Judge Atcheson, of Washington. Meanwhile he will go on with bit duties in the College and also with hU preaching. lie says that when he was stationed at Baltimore some years ago be read it course ot law. He dii so as a matter of recreation. His idea is that understanding law will enable him to increase the scope of educational facilities at the College, and thus enlarge the sphere of hi? own and thc'institution's usefulness. Ho will not practice law, however, unless "turned out of the College and unable to get a church." .Some persons may suspect that he apprehends such a contingency, as it is not usual for College Presidents to absorb law, theology and academic instruction in one chair. The Doctor may be a sort of Lord Bacon, who takes "all knowledge for his specialty," and then again, begging his pardon, he may be making the ime mistake that the hen made who spread herself over so many eggs that she failed to hatch any of them. It would be a sad circumstance if the Doctor should simply bo preparing L!?...... lr>? rtf l.?. niujrvn iu luiii viui .. iv v_ yers and theologians on the public. In that deplorable event he would poiaibljr better appreciate the wisdom of the man nlio said "nc tutor ultra crepidam " Antichrist's Programme.?A preacher named Baxter is making England happy by interpreting the prophecies of Daniel and Zjchariab, with a little aid from the Apocalypse. The Uunaparte family ore going to be in business about this period. Cardinal Lucicn is to be the nest Pope, and his young cousin, the prince imperial, will ascend the French throne under ultramontane inlluences. The present war will go on, and a new one ariee between France and Germany the result of both being the reconstruction of the ten kingdoms which formed the Human empire ci Augustus Csciar. Then Khali arise AnucnriBi, in me person of a nobody, who f-ball become a great king, according to the prophet Daniel. This role is likely to be assumed by Prince Jerome Napoleon,?an J the above requirements for the character are natistied well enough in him; but how is he to become a sovereign of fome small mate in Am Minor, as Baxter stipulates? However,?letting that pass,?Antichrist is to conquer the world, make a seven* year's convenant with the Jews, and rule disreputably for half that time, when another and the great Antichrist, who mas* querades in prophecy as "the 'little horn," is to arise, pet siege to Jerusalem and meet his Sedan in the battle of Armageddon. It will take seven months to clear away the mountains of dead bodies that will be heaped up in this conflict. After all this Christ will appear bodily on the Mount of Olives, and begin his thousandyears' reign upon earth. At that time 144,000 Christians,?the elect,?will be translated, and there trili be more conversions to the truth in one generation than have been made in 0000 years. If it can bedor.eno easy as that, why can't we have it done now, and right along??the world would certainly be much pleasanter to live in. But Baxter does not touch on this poir.t, and, like all other expounders he doesn't take the United States into con* *ideration at all. In fact, it seems that the Hebrew piophets, who cculd see the end of the world in detail, conld't Fee acron the Atlantic at all. Brooke Co tun y News.?We notice that Sheriff .Curtis, of Brooke county, announced through the Wellaburg press the darn on which taxes can be paid, discount off, at each prominent point in the county. Would it not be well to hereafter make the same port of an announce* ment in this county, instead of confining the notice as heretofore to a small hand bill that but tew people ever see. There is to be a sale of the personal effect* of the late Montgomery Walker at his late residence, near West Liberty, next Tuesday. There is aUoJto be a sale of sheep, horse.*, &c.t at Z. Brigga & Bro., woolen manufacturers, are meeting with a very satisfactory de- ' gree of *access at their factory on Buffalo Crefk, one mile from Wellsburg. Their goods stand well in the market. I.C. BickerstafT offers his house and eighteen acres of good land for sale. The property is known as the Cox homestead. J. C. Kirker, of Wellsburg, is clerk of the "Salt Valley," and when ehe gets going in the Pittsburgh and Ironton trade she will atop at Wellsburg on her up trip every Sundav. Kirker is an old times on the river and very popular with the public. The Wellsiweg >'ca announces that a number of the converted Murphys have gone back to their cups. The -Vrin' temperance newa is to be taken cum grano. A warm tribute of respcct is paid to the late Wm. H. Hervey by Wellsburg (Masonic) Lodge No. 2. He was truly a number one man, and hi* low is *incere* a ly deplored at Wellsburg. ' The delinquent list of Brooke county J for the rear 1S7C was only a trifle over $100. Bethany College ha* opened its 37th j session with 105 student*. Prof. C. L. Loo*, of that institution, is President of F the Board of Education of Buffalo District. lie appears in print this week to ) show why Bethany, alone of all the dis- ii tricta in Brooke county outside of Wells* o burg, has a graded school. Being a n graded school it geta a bonus from the c Peabody fund every year. "Doc" Kubn and family leate thia week for Ottawa, Kansas. Over the Hirer >own. The St. Clairsville papers of this week are considerably occupied with the resuits of the election. There la one Republican candidate who has not lost heart over the [result. Fat Joe Harris, candidate for Auditor, on hearing the news telegraphed to his successful corn* petitor to "take charge of the Auditor's office for a few dsvr; 1 am going to Boston with ray Bay window." Ccfthnd replied, telling him to "fill it with a bushel of oysters at my expense." The Chronicle intimates that if Koss Alexander is not careful of what he says about it (the Chronicle) he will hear of some revelations ot a fragrant character. The Gatelte is in a very tuneful mood orer the general result in Ohio. Whether mis verse is original or noi we win noi undertake to decide. It appears in the shape of a lament by our friend Rutherford over the return!: O, Matthews, I nin tlrai now, I do n it cire to bear you blow. Juit pour tome cimpbor on my brow, And turn the gas down itrj low; 0, Malthrwi, dear, the game ii up, 1 hear the mijht/ itlabop trtadj Now itir ?-ime cervine in 1117 tup, And put me in my little bed. The Mine paper quotes the following words of Jerry lHack before the Electoral Commission, as being applicable to the Ohio returns: "Justice travels with a leaden heel but strikes with an iron hand. Wait till the flood-gate is lifted, and a full head of water comes rushing on. Wait and you will nee a fine grinding then." The Chronicle seems to be put out over the scratching that was done by the Re* publicans, and says that "while this course is persisted in by men of sense they may expect nothing but defeat." Bro. Hunt should remember that scratching is wholesome (and a great relief) where* ever there id local irritation, and judging by the result over the river we suppose thare was a good deal of irritation. The Democrats appear to hare done some scratching, too. Their highest candidate has 1,315 majority and the lowest only 2. Eaton, for Treasurer, has only 289 while Taylor, for Infirmary Director, haa G67. This shows that the voting was quite promiscuous. It is not thought at Bellaire that it is worth while to prosecuto further the interesting query raised by the lndtptndent during the canvass as to where Wag ner and Gow spent that night they were in Cincinnati together. Washington County, Pa,?According to a paragraph in the Examiner Washing ton county has 46 voting districts, 31 township?, 12,607 voters and a population of over 60,000. She pays into her county treasury annually a tax of $113,257 03. Her richest township is Amwell, its tax being $5,OSS 83. Smith id next, $,501 41; Mt. Plaasant pays $5,301 57, West Bethlehem, $5,009 32. The tax of the borough is $5,567 29. The county treasury paid the State Treasurer on the 1st instant, $6,300, the direct State tax due from the county. Ifon. W. S. Moore, we regret to learn, is lying eo ill at his home in Washington, that but faint hopes of his recovery are entertained. __Mr. George Buchanan, an old teacher and for seme time past inventor and patent ajrent in Washington, has struck a $40,000 bonanza in the shape of an invention. Some time ago among hia many inventions?over 100 in all?he hit upon a new and novel idea in the washing machine business. He speedily embodied this in substantial form and recently sold bis patent right to an enterprising Pittsburgh firm for $40,000, reserving the sale in sixteen counties.?Examiner. Mr. Isaac Porter and hi* wife have been appointed to superintend one of the six One buildings at the Morganza Reform School. They will have the supervision of "a family" of about fifty male inmates and will receive in compensation their board and $GOO per annum. Speaking about the recent 'successful fair at Burgettstown, the Enminer remarks that "the oldest and ]?rhap? the most popular of our county fairs is that held at Burgettstown. For more than a score of years, Rood management, superior exhibits and its peculiarly sociable atmosphere, have secured it a wide patronage and a tirm grasp upon the popular good will. Its central location between the three States of West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, has done much to give it a dignity beyond a mere county affair, and now it really enjora a prestige surpassing some State fairs." The Origin ol I'oMtuge Mumps. The origin of the stamp had a ting of romance in it. It was thirty-seven years that Rowland Ilill, while crossing a district in the north of England, arrived at the door of an inn where a postman had stopped to deliver a letter. A young girl same out to receive it; she turned it over and over in her hand and asked the price Df postage. This was a large sum and evidently the girl was poor, for the postman demanded a shilling. She sighed ladly, and eaid the letter was from her brother, but that she had no money; and *o she returned the letter to the postman. Touched with pity, Mr. Hill paid the postage and gave the letter to the girl, who seemed very much embarrassed. Scarcely had the postman turned his back when the young innkeeper'* daughter :onfessed that it was a trick between her ind her brother. Some signs on the enrelope told her all she wanted to know, >ut the letter contained no writing. "We ire both so poor," she added, "that we inrented this mode of corresponding with>ut paving for our letter!. The traveler continued his road, asked himself if i system giving place to such frauds was tot a vicious one. 'he*e morsels, covered with sand, stained rith ink and often picked from heaps of J efu*e, are sold by the servants to the Baker of Old," who turns them into j lew preparations. The merchandise is 1 irst carefully sorted out. The fragments rhich are judged to be still in a presents- \ tie condition are dried in an oven and i orm crouta au pot, which are used up in oup at low-class restaurants. Almost ill the loRenge-shaped crusts served in , lishes of vegetables have this origin. The ; irumbs and defective crusts are pounded < n a mortar until they become a white isste, which butchers use to adorn cut ets. Ail the material that appears abwutely incapable of further service is then oaated reduced to charcoal, ground into x>wder, and, by the addition of a few Irops of essence of mint is converted ino a tooth paste. 8uch is one of the meta- ( norphoses of Parsiau industry. UUHHHHHi THE NEBULAS HYPOTHESIS. It* Weakncia and belectc-Falls 10 Account lor Heeenl DImotcrip*. Mr. Richard A. Proctor, In a communication to the London Timrt on the probability oi tatellllM hiring altendanti. makea the following rcmarki In regard to the Nebular Hypothetic It Heme to me *e hare pbyilcil realou. in the proctuta by which our intern probably reached ill present condition, lor expecting some euch relations aa actually exiit among the satellites. La* place'a nebular or rather gaseous hypoth* enit. regarded an of itaelf sufficient to ex* plain the phenomena of the aolar ayitem, has long seemed to me unsatisfactory, dynamically a* well aa physically (in fact physically it ia open to overwhelming objections, which physicists havu been un* apt to urge, because perhaps of Laplace's eminence as a mathematician.) It has received its death blow, 1 venture to as* sert, in the interesting discovery made by Lord Lindsay, that a so-called new star has cooled into a so-called gaseous nebula. Facts are now known to us however, which afford means for a far more satisfactory theory of the genesis of the I solar system, a theory whicn without absolutely rejecting the admittedly hypothetical part of Laplace'd reaaoning, brings into action processes still going on, though no longer with the activity which formerly characteriied them. At the founi dation of this theory, which I have advocated for the last seven years, lie two cir* cu instances?first, that the nebulous (not wholly gaseous) material out of which the solar system km to be formed, must have been sparsely strewn at the outskirts and densely strewn at the centre, gradu* ally increasing in density of distribution inward?; secondly, that the motions of its component meteoric andcometic mem| bera must have been slow at the outskirts [ (about three miles per second at twice Neptune's distance), very rapid near the centre, about 350 miles per second at the S resent position of the sun's surface, rom these two facta, the former almost certain, the latter absolutely certain, all the general relations of magnitude, rotational motion, axial position, satellite abundance, and so forth, of which, be it remembered, Laplace's hypothesis gave no account whatever, are easily and naturally explained. It was not an absolute necessity for this theory but it was much to be expected, that the number of satellites should Qrst (proceeding from without inward*) increase up to the region of maximum development and thence decrease. It is a natural effect of the two circumstances above mentioned, that at some mid region the largest planets would be found, and there or thereabouts the greatest complexity of structure. "Within the former region marked ?.? t., : .l 1-1 WJ o |IICKIUIUCIH UJUO IUCIQ IIUUIU be only very small gnlanets, and outside this region planets of smaller dimensions than the giants of the system. From the region of greatest complexity of structure, marked by the wonderful Saturnian system there would be certainly a diminishing complexity of structure inwards (such as we recognise in the diminishing number of moons attending on Jupiter, Mars, the Earth, and Venus), and probably a similar diminution outwards, as we seem to recognise in the moon symptoms of Urauus and Neptune. In hid rin^system, Saturn may be said to have millions of satellites; and as neither Uranus nor Neptune has any rings, we perceive that any analogy" which would lead us to expect greater complex| ity of structure with mere increase of I distance is illusory. Lord Lindsay's discovery accords in the most satisfactory way with the meteoric [ or, rather, the nebu'la-metoric theory of i the genesis of our solar system. DIED.
