(Entered at the Poatofllce at %hwlln*, W. Va.,*a uroudda* matter.] _ WHEELING. W. VA., JANUARY ?, 1883. MAi I then l?c Bi.'; Mr. Freeman, the historian, having re turned to tbe land of American beef and Yorkshire podding, takes up bis pen to pass a few criticisms on our American manners and customs. Mr. Freeman does not "sail into" us after the fashion of tbe earlier English visitors?Dickens, bis suc cessors and imitators?who hurried through our new country, got home out of breatii, I and before they were comfortably settled I rushed out boofopf little value and much bile wiping up toe whole American conti-1 went. I Mr. Freeman in a keen observer, and! what he says is kindly said. One of his] points has impressed others than visitors, aud we should gain something in the way of good taste and for our language if we should content to reform in this respect. Mr. Freeman seems to have been dazed by the utter recklessness with which we iling titles of all sorts at people who have no claim tq them and many of whom do not take kindly to them. He found that "ColoueJ," "Judge," "Professor," "Gover nor" and the like are applied to people who not only have not, but never had, a claim to them. lie even thinks it a little odd to apply those titles to people who have woru them but do not now. "Pro fessor" he got himself, though he explains that, it does not belong to him. Being one day in company with some "Professors" he called their attention to a "Professor" then in town giving an exhibition of perform ing dogs, and asked why any of them should desire to wear such a title. Hut Mr. Freeman was most struck?as well he might be?with "Mra. Professor," "Mrs. Senator,", "Mrs. ex-Senator," "Mrs. Colonel," "Mrs. Judge," and the like. It is custom, but if it is taste it is certainly not good taste. Mrs. Jones, wife of Senator Jones, is well enough, and quite enough, if Jones is a Senator; but "Mrs. Senator Jones" is about as bad a use of language as can be imagined. Those who misuse, and those who gra ciously accept, these titles do not stop to think.that the custom grows out of a strain ing after some mark of distinction which shall place one man or one woman a little above auother, after the fashion of titled peo ple where those things are held in esteem; and this is not in harmony with the boasted simplicity of our Republican ? institutions Titles are properly applied to men holding place with tille attached, otherwise "Mr." is the correct address?never "Mrs. Col onel," "Mrs. Judge." L We have no hope of bringing about a great reform in this matter, but it is some times profitable to "soe ourselves as ithers PERSONAL.
